Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10-speed cassette compatible with previously 9-speed setup?

I'm looking at buying a 10-speed cassette for someone as a gift, and I'm not entirely sure if it'll be compatible with their present setup, which is essentially all Shimano Tiagra 9-speed, 12-27 cassette. Is there something obvious that won't work here? Nothing's occurring to me, but I'm quite ignorant about it, and I don't want to buy a completely useless item as a gift. Any help would be appreciated.

Answered already - thanks everyone!

no. it's not. They'll need to also upgrade to a 10 speed chain and rear shifter, probably a 10 speed crank, and possibly a narrow-chain front derailleur.

10 spd cog spacing is actually done in a slightly narrower width than in what 9 spd is accomplished.
Hence 9 spd chains, because they are too wide, will not work well on 10 spd cassettes.
9 spd shifter will also not work on 10 spd cassette, since 9 spd shift index is wider than 10 spd, would likely cause multiple alignement, shifting and skipping issues

so it's prolly not a good idea to get a 10 spd cassette and put it into a 9 spd setup...

Yeah, this makes good sense, I don't know why it didn't occur to me. Thanks for the explanation.

Is there any reason you don't want to just get a new 9 speed cassette?

I was originally thinking about the 10-speed for the narrower ranges on the shifts. Would the difference between a Tiagra and Ultregra Cassette be noticeable with all else kept the same?

Geez it would be nice, though, if a 9 to 10 speed upgrade only required a new cassette!

Not really; unless it's worn out. If it is worn, a new cassette and chain can make a nice difference.

IMHO no, it's about the motor no matter what cassette you choose. If your friend already has a Tiagra group why not just go with the Tiagra cassette? It's your money though so if you feel the need to spend $70 for an Ultegra cassette have at it.

It sounds like you are actually asking about the difference between 9 and 10 speed cassettes of the same range and not the difference between Tiagra 9sp and Ultegra 9sp cassettes. If they are of the same range there is only one shift gap that is wider. For example, on a 12-25t the 9sp is 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 while the 10sp adds in 16t. But some people due spend a lot of time in that range so I guess it could matter.

Or get the 13-25 in order to keep the super awesome 16t cog. It's much more useful than a 12t cog, especially if you live in the flat lands.

Thanks for the replies all. Basically, I was just looking to get a small Christmas gift, so it was intended to be something that isn't a big deal, but is fun and shiny. If it's down to literally just being shiny when put on, but completely unnoticeable afterwards, it seems rather pointless though. Time to find something else instead, I think!

Cassettes wear out, so it would be a usable gift. Just make sure you get the right cog range that they use (12-25, 12-28, 13-29 .. Or whatever)

The cranks would be fine. The chain would be too wide and the rear shifter wouldn't be able to index out correctly. FD should work just fine with a tweak to the limit screws.
