been dreaming about a personal tour of the owens valley for a few years and riding all the monster climbs of horseshoe lakes, whitney portal, big pine, onion valley. white mtns, rock creek, etc
but i think riding all the significant roads/climbs in either the santa monica or san gabriel mtns is more achievable this coming year for me. they are both within realistic day tripper distance
and/or grab a hotel room for one or two weekends.

2012 was a year of 4's
4,400 miles
4 Double Centuries
4 Centuries
4 Days hospital stay post crash. (Fourteen hundred miles since then)
2013 Goals:
Keep both wheels rubber side down.
Rides beginning at home end at my driveway.
Rides beginning at a friend's home end at the friend's driveway.
Local rides where I drive too start point end back at the car.
Destination rides in remote towns end back at the motel room.
Enjoy every turn of the cranks.

No goals. I had none in 2012 and still ended up with a bunch of miles. I have none for 2013.
Ok, that's not quite accurate. My goal is to have a fun time riding my bike, enjoy time with friends, and make some new ones.

Man, you are asking for a challenge and after a year like 2012 what's left for you to tackle???
Of course the easy answer is to recommend the double centuries still missing in your quiver, Mt.Tam double is obvious but honestly you should give a try to the Eastern Sierra double, or to the Alta Alpina Challenge.
Keeping in mind that a special jersey seems to be a top motivator to get you on a suffer fest here are some clues:
- The CATC organization has the 'Stage Race' every year and 2013 will be in NorCal territory; that's a jersey that few people get the privilege to wear.
- Other considerations are the Climb to Kaiser and, even tougher, the Everest Challenge.
- If you are willing to forgive your motto to never participate in anything that mentions death, or something similar, this next suggestion is fun and beautiful... in short it's a MUST DO ride. Get in the 2013 Death Ride if it's not too late already. Experiencing Monitor Pass without cars has no equivalent.
- My last suggestion is probably above your abilities (note the intended sarcasm meant to tickle your ego... sorry pride), the date is October 4 to 7, it's the ultimate California challenge. You can even halve the pain by sharing it with a companion or two (for some reason I think your partner in self-induced pain won't be far during any of those crazy challenges, ... yes I mean LOS). No need to mention the ride name, the date is enough as it could define your whole 2013 riding schedule. This challenge is not for flukes (yes, that includes me), although the jersey would hugely benefit from your creative input (i.e. it's boring) it definitely commands respect.
By the way, congratulations on an incredible riding year.
Wishing you lots of riding FUN for 2013!

My 2012 goal was Alta Alpina on a recumbent. I got the finishers jersey, though not sure if I'll do it that way again. Secondary goal was to do enough for the Triple Crown (up from only having done Davis previously), and managed to do five + volunteer with the fall rides. The big win of the goal was that I got in so much better shape than I was previously ... I could do Davis in so-so shape, but Alta Alpina required that I lose weight/get stronger/both, and my plan is to build on that in 2013.
My 2013 goal is to do Devil's Mountain and Terrible Two. I know both of those have been done many times on a recumbent, so I'm thinking I need to start riding the road bike again. If either/both of those are in the CTC stage race, I'll be compelled to do all in the series.

Curtis:
Alta Alpina Challenge.
Everest Challenge (there's a tourist division so you don't have to sign up as a racer).
Death Ride reg is closed although there may be a "second rush" reg in March. It's worth doing just as an event, altough I think the riding is better if you go some other time. There's hardly any traffic on Monitor and Ebbetts passes so it's safer to do them when the road is open than to do them in the Death Ride when there's 3499 other cyclists on the road. But it's worth doing as the Death Ride just to participate in the event.
My goals: I'd like to actually win a race. I got two thirds and a second place this year. I can also improve on my placing at Everest Challenge.

I joined the RUSA and am looking at a few rides with the San Francisco Club (Valley Ford 200k and La Ruta Loca are on my calendar)
More Cross/Mixed Terrain rides (Grasshopper, Rally Cat and the like.)
Doing my clubs yearly ride to Paso Robles.
And just riding lots...

I was looking the Tam Double but it has a time limit that I would likely not make. Bummer. I'll ride forever, but it takes forever or longer

Coming up on 38, I just want to delay the inevitible downward slide of riding ability. It's been over 5 years since I've PR'd on most of my climbs/rides that I do, but I've maintained a level just below that for a while...just want to hang onto that for a few more years!

2013 Cycling Goals:5 Passes of The Alta Alpina Challenge in June. Missed last year due to unforseen circumstances, going to train like heck for this year.
Want to see the Fall colors of the Eastern Sierra as well.

Furnace Creek 508.
If you haven't done that yet, you're just another face in the crowd.

4435mi in 2012, certainly a step up from 2600 miles in 2011 (here is the old thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ileage-reports )
For 2013 my goal is: ride to work, since I'm presently unemployed
(actually I'm less worried about getting a new job than I am about getting a new job that's not far enough away to deserve a good commute ride! Otherwise how will I keep my mileage up?)
