Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When will it end?

Winter that is.
It's -28 and although we had a bunch of snow last night its supposed to snow another 4 inches tonight. The ditches have at least 10-12 feet of snow in them.
It won't be above freezing for weeks and this is getting to be a long winter......

Not too far north. Maybe 2 hours from the U.S border.
I was blowing snow with the tractor today and I can't remember a winter when I spent so much time moving snow. I have banks 6 feet deep across my 1/2 acre yard.
I can't remember what bare pavement looks like

Suck here to, not as cold as you guys but the snow just does not stop. It'll be sunny for a week and you think spring is finally coming, but no, you end up getting snow for another 2 weeks. So decieving. Apparenty last year at this time it was already 20 above and sunny in Toronto, people were on the beaches...

80-something in vegas today. As usual, we're skipping spring and going straight to summer.

You Canadians are nuts. Move south or if you can't stomach the USA (I would not blame you!) then move to Vancouver.

Sorry about the whining.
In 6 or 7 weeks I will most likely be out on the road on my new bike.
Until September/October, when the snow starts piling up again.

Not as extreme in Minnesota, but also we're having problems turning the corner towards spring. It was 19 °F this morning and it's supposed to be °9F tomorrow morning. That's late January/early February weather, not mid- March. The snow banks show little evidence of receding and on the few days when they do melt a little, they produce a layer of water on the roads that, after sundown, give us bad glare ice.

I was headed to a group ride this morning and went down on same bad ice. Yes, I have studded tires, but they are Nokian A10s, which aren't as totally sure-footed as the fully studded Kenda Klondikes on my MTB. I wasn't hurt, but one of the cheap platform pedals I use in the winter (with Powergrips) broke off the spindle axle, so I was done for the morning. I fixed the pedal and got in about 30 miles in a solo ride in the afternoon, when much of the ice was gone.

Most years in Minnesota, we've had significant thaws by now and we're riding on dry but dirty potholed roads most days- our typical early spring. Not this year.

I'll be in Houston next week for a business trip. A buddy is supposed to meet me for some early morning rides - on real road bikes! I can't wait.

Think of your crappy weather as a firewall against hordes of moronic Americans flooding across your borders.

It ended on August 31.

Or for me, this year, on January 16.

Now it's autumn, and starting to feel like autumn after a very long, hot summer. It's been over 30C, well over on most days, since January 16.

You need to travel!

During the last few years I lived on the Canadian Prairies, I started travelling during the winter whenever I could.

I took a couple weeks in the UK in November in 2002 ... I rode with a CTC group who apologised to me for the warm, rainy weather they were having, and I just laughed and said it wasn't a problem. Winnipeg had just been dumped on with about 2 feet of snow, and the temperatures were around -25C.

In 2004, I was in Australia for 3 months from the end of September to the end of December ... missed the November and December winter months entirely.

In 2007, I went to Vancouver Island for a week in early April, and again enjoyed the warm, rainy weather. Meanwhile Edmonton was still in the throws of winter.

In 2008, I went to Australia for a couple weeks in February. Edmonton in January/February ... around -30C. Melbourne area in February ... around +30C.

In 2011, Rowan and I left the cold and rainy Australian winter that August and came to Canada to enjoy August in BC.

Over the past year, we left Australia in early June, right at the beginning of winter ... then enjoyed summer and autumn in the northern hemisphere. When winter in the northern hemisphere came, were in the southern US for most of it, and then in BC over Christmas ... so we got about a month of winter there. Then we returned to Australia mid-January, right into the heat of summer. One month of winter isn't bad, especially over Christmas.

Save up your nickels (can't save up your pennies anymore!) and go somewhere warm for a couple weeks next winter. It helps.
