Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strava & myheavy I-phone

I am trying to use the new Strava app but I am not a big fan of the weight of the thing in my jersey. I am also putting it into a plastic baggy to keep it dry from sweat. For those who are using do you like it and how are you coping with this issue?

The weight of a phone in my jersey has never been a problem for me, but then again, I carry tubes, c02, pump, gels, rain jacket in there too. I briefly used a Tigra iPhone bar mount, but those things are big, ugly and a disaster waiting to happen. I use a Garmin Edge 500 for Strava now.

good god, how heavy is your phone? I've always carried my HTC droid phone and I hardly notice it.

The weight of my phone (Droid3) isn't much of an issue. But the short battery life is. Saving up for a Garmin Edge.

EDIT: I'd still carry the phone for emergencies, but not having to enable GPS on it would mean it would last the duration of my ride.

You probably have too many apps on your phone. Delete half of them to lower the weight.

I still don't see what "being fast" has to do with whether or not someone should care about a small amount of weight.

I carry my phone in my jersey pocket and it hasn't been a big deal for me. I'll be carrying a phone, for emergencies, even when I've got a GPS.

I have a Garmin and still carry the phone in my jersey pocket (in ziplock bag). The combined weight is really slowing me down. THAT is why I'm slow. Has nothing to do with the engine.
Seriously, even if not using strava or whatever I'd still carry a phone in my jersey. If having it in your jersey bothers you, maybe get a big saddle bag to put it in? The phone will still track everything just fine in there.

Because most people can't understand why anyone would care about carrying an extra 150g of weight. The only conclusion most people can think of is that the rider must be racing and worried about losing tenths of a second here or there. 'Slow' people generally don't care where they finish.

Try deleting some data. You'll shave a number of grams.

He said the weight in his jersey. Maybe his pockets are sagging. Or he has a bad back and gets sore easily.

If 150g give you a sore back you've got serious problems... If his pockets are sagging he should probably throw away his wool jersey

Throw a real apple in the other pocket, then the Apple iPhone will seem like less of a burden.

Also, make sure you have it set up for wireless. The wires can otherwise really slow you down.

In which case, he doesn't need a Garmin, he'd be better off spending the same money on a bike fit.

When training and just riding, I always have my iphone with me in case of emergency or whatever. Like others, I also have a tube, tire irons, a C02 and a multi tool in my jersey. Honestly i don;t notice it at all. I cannot say that it slows me down at all. You know the old adage: train heavy, race light!
I also have a heavy garmin 800 on the bike...still just as quick. Must be the fancy wheels...

Forrest, you have been on a roll lately.

I have loads of industrial strength ziploc bags at my disposal and use those with the phone in my jersey pocket.

That is, when I am not carrying my anvil back there.
