Another Way to Fall

Last week I was riding up a steep hill (at the arrow):

The road was damp, with possibly a thin layer or mud. I was standing up, and with the acceleration when my foot came down, I lost all traction and fell into the car lane. It was kind of like club tombay, but there was no chance to unclip.

If one of those drivers who gives no space had been coming along at the just the wrong time, it would have been trouble.

The only consolation was that this beautiful young woman with thick lustrous hair stopped her car to check that I was OK.

I guess the moral is to avoid the sudden accelerations when standing up, something that's not efficient anyway. Unless you want to meet beautiful young women with thick lustrous hair.

Note to self: Wiping out is only recommended when a beautiful young woman with thick lustrous hair is approaching.

Thanks for the tip TromboneAl!

I prefer to meet all my beautiful young women with thick lustrous hair under less painful and embarrassing conditions.

Who am I kidding? I'll take what I can get!

That hill looks so steep it's no wonder you fell! It looks almost vertical! What was the %?

Anyway, very glad you survived so well and had a bonus meeting too !

Look at the vertical and horizontal scales. Roughly, it looks like 400' over 1/2 mile which is ~15%. With the resolution in that graph there certainly can be much steeper ramps hidden in the curve.

I don't know if it's a rule, but in the only two times I joined Club Tombay, the sole witness was an attractive young woman. The first one, in a car behind me in a left-hand turning lane, laughed at me, but it wasn't a mean laugh. The second, standing in a parking lot looking right at me, kindly pretended that she hadn't seen me do something really stupid.

Based on these two experiences, I have extracted the Tombay Law, which is that (at least if you are an old guy) it always happens when a young woman is watching.

Al, that's what happened to Bob Ornelas, a local rider, lost traction in a rut I believe and went down on Scenic drive and got run over by a pick up who was following closely. He got messed up pretty bad but is back out there again. It can happen so fast.

Without pics, it didn't happen. It was probably an 80-year old bald woman with no teeth.

The Tombay part, though, we believe without the pic.

I've done the same thing on wet leaves. Sometimes the climb is so steep that each pedal stroke has enough torque to spin out the back wheel. And if it's steep enough and you can't get any traction, down you go. I was fortunate to fall toward the side of the road. Although there was no one around to "check that I was OK."

El Capitan faces south. The north face of The Eiger, perhaps?

There's more than one way to fall?

Whenever I fall, and I've done that with more regularity than I'd like, I ALWAYS go down.

Half dome works. It has faces in all directions, though the famous one is a N (or NW) face. El Cap only has a south face.

Memories can be tricky for those of us in the 50+ room.
