What's your Flop side gearing?

This is more directed at distance FG riders. I am curious what your gearing is on the flop side (if applicable). Currently, I ride 48x18 and have a 17T on the other side (sometimes 16T). I know some gear down with a bigger cog as a "rescue" gear, but not sure if I see the point on a fixed gear, especially routes with hills (descents would not be fun). Severe headwind, climbs, hard bonks, etc. may be more tolerable if you can flip the wheel with lower gearing, but at that point, I found it was nice to just walk your bike for a bit until recovery, then proceed.

The reason for a higher gear on my wheel is I've been on rides with rolling hills and lots of flats, and it was nice to flip the wheel for better gearing for that type of terrain. Just interested to see what everyone else runs.

Flip flop hubs seem to be something that a lot of people want but very few people actually go through the trouble of utilizing.....

When I was living and working in SF I had a flip flop of 19 & 17 which of course in the reflection of the above, stayed on the 19 the vast majority of the time.

True.

I've never used a cog on both sides but typically like the idea of having the other side just in case I manage to **** up my cog/lockring threading - but I know how to properly install a cog and lockring so it's never been an actual issue.

My hub is fixed/fixed. The two gears i use the most are 70 gi and 75 gi but I haven't flipped the wheel during a ride. Too lazy. I will flip the wheel before the ride depending upon terrain and wind. I also have a second rear wheel that I have 63 gi and 66 gi cogs on. I have a 80 gi cog to slip on if I want to see how long I can hang on the flat Thursday Night Worlds. If I were wanting to change gearing during a ride due to wind or terrain I would go with a dingleberry dual cog and 7 speed 3/32 chain with hollow axle and QR.

I've never flipped the wheel and so no longer carry the extra cog. Seeing the OP is already happy walking the bike when needed (a most sensible attitude), I'd suggest he need not bother. On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt him to fit the extra cog and see if he uses it, nothing wrong with trying new stuff and sometimes you even learn things.

You guys are right--I can remember one time I actually stopped and flipped the wheel for a big climb. Haven't done it since. I still leave the cog on there, though, just in case I mess something up or there is a dramatic change in terrain.

I flip my wheel pretty regularly but not usually during a ride, think I've done that only once . I usually leave a 17 and a19 on it for brakeless gearing or race/drops with brakes gearing.

46 x 17T on the fixed side, which I ride exclusively.

I have a 16T freewheel on the other side that I'm thinking of removing. Will I notice the weight savings?

My bike came with a fixed cog and freewheel, but I never once used the freewheel, so when I recently bought a new wheelset with a flip/flop hub, I didn't even bother putting anything on the flop side...I ride 48x17, but I may put a 19 on the flop side in the coming months, since I have a couple long, hilly rides coming up that I want to try riding fixed.

How do you know you're not already riding on the flop side and the flip side has nothing on it?

I'm changing gearing frequently be it because I go on a certain type of ride or experimenting. I had 15T (longer rides) & 16T (backup) for a while and rarely change mid-ride unless I go on a 3mi 9% climb then I change to highest gear if I was on low gear. Currently planning to go 16T & 14T since I want to use 16T on longer rides (cadence) and 14T on track (sprints) because I'm too lazy to change cogs on the track.

Rented robocop, I've been wanting to see this. I could have bought it off psn network like two weeks ago but f that,. Hopefully its better than the judge dreddvremake which was good but very linear. The total recall remake was good but still way different which I get is the idea, a new twist on an older movie.

When I was younger I had a freewheel on the flop side to use when I was tired and probably drunk so I could pedal/coast my way home. Even then I think I used it once or twice. SS kinda sucks.

Robocop was okay. I don't remember the original(s) though. Compared to Dredd, it's maybe a bit better.

I have a 17/20 dingle cog on the new bike, with a 20t freewheel on the flop side. Haven't used the freewheel side yet, but I switch between the 17/20 pretty often with a 42/45 up front, so it's a decently large change

Road: (fix/fix)
42t ring, 18/16t cogs. I use both pretty frequently, but primarily the 18t during this time of the year, as I am only doing short/easy rides on the fg, with all of my hard riding done on the road bike or track bike

Track: (fix/fix)
50t ring, 15t rear. I don't see myself using anything else for TNR at San Diego, but maybe I could use a 14t if I wanted to compete more srsly in like Keirins

Living in the mountains and working at a lower elevation than I lived and it being 12 miles one way, I ran fixed 22 and free 16 with a 48 up front. Dropouts were just long enough to manage. Served my purposes very well.
