Significant personal milestone acheived!!!
Most of my activity is over on the Hybrid forum, but I've done some posting in the Clydesdale forum and thought I would share a personal acheivement.
I turned 47 in mid May 2014, was 5'10" and 230 pounds, had been diagnosed as a Type II Diabetic 2 years earlier, and finally decided to get serious and do something about my weight and medical condition. 25 years of soccer meant that a running plan was out of the question due to my knees (at least until I lost weight), so as I pulled into the garage after work one evening, I stared at my old steel frame Mongoose MTB. I gave it some mechanical love since it had been hanging from a hook for about 5 years, and started riding. 5 miles was a chore. After 2 weeks of pedalling that pig around, I purchased my 2013 Fuji Absolute 2.1 flat bar road bike/hybrid and started slowly increasing my distance and time in the saddle. I set a goal to be acheived by the end of August 2014 - I wanted to be able to ride 100 miles in one week.
Well, tonight I can cross that off my list. I just finished a 17 mile ride tonight that capped off 6 rides in 7 days for a total of 101 miles. I was able to cross that milestone off my list nearly 2 months early. I was a little worried about how I would do as the Texas heat cranked up for the summer. The last two evenings when I started my rides saw temperatures at 98 degrees around 7:30pm, but because the sun isn't beating down at that time of night, it's actually relatively comfortable.
Riding has been a true blessing. Since starting in mid-May, I've lost 15 pounds (230 down to 215), I've dropped my fasting blood glucose level by over 100 points, and am feeling significantly better about my present and future life and health. I want to be able to wean off my diabetes medication at some point and get down to 185 pounds. I believe I'm on my way!
I don't post much on the Clydesdale forum, but I spend a lot of time reading and being inspired by all of you. I hope my story can do that for others.
Cheers everyone!!!

That's awesome. Biking and diet has allowed me to get normal blood sugar (I'm type 2 diabetic) and I hope it will do the same for you.

These posts are always inspirational. My issues with running come from shin splints. I'll go out for about a 2-mile easy jog and my shins kill me for two days after. Got my Trek Verve 2 this May to get some quality family time and more excercise that won't cripple me and I like checking this forum to see everyone's progress.
Congrats on your mile-stone!

Congrats on your milestone! What is your next goal? I have observed that folks that have a goal seem to keep after it and those that reach one goal without adding a new one slide backwards. It has also been my observation that controlling ones diet is what helps with weight loss or control and exercise plays a huge part in BG control and or reduction. Keep the trend positive.

You're right though. That first goal wasn't the finish line. I plan to pick up indoor and outdoor soccer by next spring since the game has always been a lifelong passion, be it playing or coaching. All this is helping me get back there.
Cheers!

My next goals are to first consistently maintain between 80-110 miles per week through the Texas summer heat while working in longer weekend morning rides and 3-4 weeknight evenings. My second goal is reaching weight targets: I want to reach between 205 and 210 pounds by Labor day, and 200 by Thanksgiving. I'm at the point where my weight loss has slowed a bit as the muscle tissue builds up with the increased riding, but it is still continuing. I'm doing it with a combination of riding and diet. I'm just trying to watch my portions and concentrate on good v. bad. I know I can't be successful by completely eliminating the things I love from my table, so I just try to minimize my guilty pleasures like potatoes and bread. Thankfully, I've never been one to crave desserts, sweets, or sodas.
You're right though. That first goal wasn't the finish line. I plan to pick up indoor and outdoor soccer by next spring since the game has always been a lifelong passion, be it playing or coaching. All this is helping me get back there.
Cheers!

Congrats! These stories really get me heading to the garage to pulling out the old bike and putting some more miles on it. The success stories both motivate and educate, thank you very much.

That is a great thing :-)
Not sure if you ever gave Myfitnesspal ap a look, but I can assure you that you can probably reach your weight goals a LOT faster if you want to by logging your meals and exercise. I started riding June 1 and have over 500 miles in now, and can count on at least 10 lbs a month so far, and I'm getting stronger/faster too :-) while losing at that rate.
I use cyclemeter ap to log rides, it is great to be able to look back over my ride history :-).
I'm 5-8 myself and started at 304....75 days ago, started riding at 280 or so, and am 256 or so now :-).
Building your base is a great thing :-) I'm around 20 myself on a 2001 trek 7200...did a metric century 4th of July weekend :-)
