At least OBDII is standardized across manufacturers by government regulators. I don't picture that from bike component manufacturers nor does the government have a compelling reason to require it. .

Actually, the one real problem I can think of is cables fraying and breaking in Shimano STI shifters, although not worth “upgrading” to electronic IMHO.
