same thing happened in Japan. My bike and I flew Alaska from PDX to LAX, and JAL from LAX-tokyo.

There was no charge because I'm MVP Gold with Alaska.

I get the 2nd water bottle on the seat tube, but it makes it hard to pick up a bike.

I just did the IZU peninsula (just south of Fuji) and am aching to go back and do more. The cars seem very tolerant of us cyclists and I had no trouble at all. The many onsens helped too.

It seems to my untrained eyes, the 71 has a more relaxed head tube angle, stretching the wheelbase out a little....
