I wonder if the front derailleur on the first bike is bad. If it won't hold the tension it's supposed to against the shifter, it won't hold position. BTDT. Maybe try a test-swap?

I keep a spare 6-foot steel cable with the trailer. I loop it around the trailer's frame, pass it through the rear wheel of the bike, and secure the other end to the bike's U-lock. So far, so good.

AFAIK, the 27" steel rims match up fine with a 27 x 1 1/4 tire, same as aluminum. It's the old 26-inch steel rims that are the oddballs. It might be worth trying just to settle the matter.
