I could be mistaken but I think the general rule of thumb is to increase your mileage no more than 10-20% increments when you first start out.
So 10 miles for a week, then 12 miles for a week ect...

I only transport the bike once a week at most so it's easy and diden't cost extra and it comes in handy for pre race or ride warm up.
