Only shorts. I own bibs and tuck the useless shoulder straps in the waist band. I should just cut them off.
I find no comfort difference.
Bibs are more awkward at "rest" stops.

Yes, the drivetrain doesn't really care what crankset you use. I even have a bike with Campy 10, and a 1980 Nuovo Record front derailleur. Shifting's not perfect, but it works.

Not a fan of bibs. I tuck the shoulder straps in the waist band and wear them like shorts. More comfortable and easier at pit stops.
