everywhere else is a bit of a bore for both racing and spectating...but, the course is short enough that you walk it and find your favorite spot.

one other outside reason would be corrosion.
if brass were stronger you'd have Dura-Ace cranks made of the stuff...it's a soft material but holds...

the GT's 'wings' as manboy calls them are a very important part of the bars...used for the start only...remember these are pursuit/kilo bikes in which there is a standing start.

I havn't torn into mine but it appears to be standard equipment for that time.
Because both the idler and drive chains are on the ride side you should be able to use any standard OPC BB and cranks...
