If I figured it right (17/53) on 700c wheels with 25's, my gear inches equals 84. Our terrain is flat with just a few bumps. So to get up any kind of hill, I am standing up to crank harder.

You ‘adjust’ chain stay clearance by ‘dimpling’ the chain stay. Works well on steel frames...but risky on aluminum...and not possible on carbon frames.

I am using the original chain ring- so it does have shifting ramps, but the chain line front to back is good. On the rear, I have the 16 tooth sprocket and spacers on a freewheel Shimano hub.
