The Gant Challenge

I rode "The Gant Challange in Chicago. They made a course in the lakefront park on the grass, with watered down muddy sections. I rode my Schwinn King Sting with Stu Thompson handlebars.

Regarding the self adjusting levers, there is a spring inside that plastic housing that can easily be removed and then you have a free turning adjusting barrel. Takes less that a minute.

You can take a pin punch to the race seat on the fork, just go around the fork punching around the surface of the race seat to give it more edge.

G0484 is not a serial number it is a Giant company production date code stamped on the dropout. Look on the non drive side dropout for the serial number.

ISO rim diameters:
650b and 27.5 = 584mm
700c and 29" = 622mm
27" == 630mm
So the radius of a 700c from hub center to rim is only 4mm less than 27".

That is a 1970s Paramount with Nervex Professional lugs, surely a repaint with 80s decals. There might be a number hidden under that thick paint on the dropout just in front of the rack screw.

Torch brazed in Chicago in 1979, 1980 model Super Le Tour. The lugged frame bikes used a different serial format, can't stamp a number on the head tube with the head lug there.
