It's not the crank making the difference in shift quality, its the shimano rings. I got a compact gossamer off bonktown about a year ago and shifted fine for about 6 months before shift quality...

Save your money, go with the 105. They're a bit heavier. I'm sure if get on 2 identical bikes, one with Ultegra rings and one with 105 rings, you couldn't tell the difference in shift quality.

First thing you should do is asses your riding style + riding position on this bike. Do you want a lot of saddle/bar drop or a more upright position?
