is there anything else out there that has a lever rather than a screw-on ?
I have the Lezyne Gauge Drive HP pump, with a screw on chuck, and I use RideNow TPU tubes with a plastic valve stem.

Works flawlessly. I will never go back to a level style chuck, which tends to leak air if not handled gingerly.

Doubtful. The screw-on chuck threads onto the valve core, which are the same for every Presta valve.

Operator error is the most likely explanation.
