Yeah, amateurs do races of that length, and longer.

The now defunct Everest Challenge was 120 miles, 14,700' day 1; 85 miles, 12,500' day 2. Spectacular ride.

I don't race but entered the 40+ open race for fun on a 24-lb touring bike, wound up with the jersey.
