Very Old and New Bike

72 years young here. A couple of years ago turned my 1973 Carraro bike that I bought when I graduated from college into a "flower" bike. And no the handle bars weren't like that when I rode it. Current bike is a 2023 Trek Emonda SL9 AXS project one bike which you cannot appreciate the changing colors in the dim lighting. People love the colors when they see the bike in person. Both are great bikes. The Carraro is what I rode with my young children on an attached rear seat and then when we rode together as they grew older. The SL9 Emonda is my latest bike. Very smooth ride, a good climbing bike and fun to dash around on.

Just turned 64. used to ride a lot, mostly solo and commuting. Heart attack 12 years ago stopped me in my tracks. Just had a battery of tests and my doctor removed all my excuses, so I power-washed my old Miyata 1000 and had her out for the past few days. It feels great. I live in the hills of Hunterdon County NJ and I'm not ready for them just yet. It's just no fun riding when you're pounding the pedals at 6mph one minute and screaming at 45 the next, then 6, then 45. Anyway, here's my ride. I'm recabling and taping over the weekend.

I used to race but I don’t have much in the way of racing bikes anymore. I do have a 1982 Peugeot PXN 10 that I’ve been riding lately. I modded it I a bit for hill climbing (38 tooth inner and a 14-28 6 speed freewheel in the back). I worked in a Peugeot shop in college in the 80s and I really liked this bike. By the 80s, the simplex/stronglight/atom/spidel stuff was all pretty good (the super LJ shifters were excellent). This bike had a long production run and it’s a fine riding machine.

Getting there. Cleaned up the chainrings, sprockets and derailleurs. Replaced brake housing with yellow and sized them right. Carradice bag added. I'll do the shifter cables tomorrow or Wednesday. Still not sure if I want to go friction or SIS. I have Ultra 7 speed barcons on there so I guess I can switch back and forth.

I have a Shogun 500 that I bought a few years ago that's been ridden very little. It was a 3x5 or 6 setup with bar end shifters, canti brakes and 27" wheels - classic mid-80s Japanese tourer. I dont tour so I didn't see using it as a road bike, and I have a nicer bike set up for mixed surfaces, gravel and trails. So it collected dust last season. Thought about selling it but it's not a good market or desirable brand. I got the idea to switch to a modern drivetrain and wide 700c wheels to be a more dedicated trail and gravel rider - my other one is a deluxe build on a Raleigh Pro Mk I with fenders, rando bag, dynamo lighting, the works. I had some of the components, sourced a few more and built the new wheelset. It came together really nicely! I've put about 60 miles on it and it's really hitting the spot now. Glad I didn't sell it for a loss!

Tom painted a bike for me a very long time ago. I wish I could have afforded one of his bikes back then. A pros pro.

I love the way he did the cable treatment on yours. I think I'm going to try and get all my cables under the wrap. I have mustache bars with barcons and I think I can do it. I hate all that unruly spaghetti.

Thanks much. As life happens, sometime a surprise comes along and offers a new path. Yesterday in the C&V forum I learned of a huge discount on a giant-sized Rivendell frame model and ordered one - my first brand-new frame since I bought my Mercian 36 years ago. The build is very likely going to move to it when it arrives. I must honor the Shogun for being the literal vehicle that showed me how much I like the direction. The universe is a funny place!

50+ is old?? My neice says 25+ is ancient! I'm 62 - neither old nor ancient.

Anyway, you asked for pictures. I must say I get the most enjoyment out of the 'bents, but the DFs are way easier to transport (and the gas-powered one is a blast)...

Now that is a proper e-bike (the spark plug is electric, right?) Wondering if that would be an upgrade to our tandem.........

I did 20 miles on my pub crawler last night. 1983 Raleigh Marathon, townie-fied with an old sprung Brooks saddle, a two-speed kickback hub and the widest bow handlebars I've ever seen.

$248 well spent. I suggested this bike to a friend who wants a new bike. I'm skeptical of how they're put together in the store but the parts mix is very decent for that price.
