We went to my niece's house for the feast. She has 2 daughters and my sister lives there, too. It's the only time I see anyone from my family, ever. They only live about 20 miles from me.
12 people total and it was a good time. My sister is 75 and seems to be doing well, especially considering her physical issues and all the things she has been through.
She does talk to one of our other sisters once in a while but neither of us has spoken to the other sister or the 2 brothers in years.
Came home with enough leftovers to stuff myself again today. Hoping to join one of the longer club rides tomorrow and work a little of it off.

The sick kid still wants to eat her favorite home-cooked meals on her short visit home. Tonight’s choice didn’t disappoint…
Grilled balsamic-glazed filet mignon with peppercorn cream sauce, crispy baby potatoes, and blue cheese salad.

Speaking of that, I remember that a broken hip for a senior citizen used to be a death sentence not that many years ago. I don’t know why but I remember that observation clearly. I’m wondering if that has changed in recent years, because I have to tell you the fear of slipping and falling on my snowy driveway was one of the main reasons I recently relocated.

The driving route down the front range is much prettier than eastern CO, KS, and OK.

Hip replacement is a slightly different matter. https://www.brettgilbertmd.com/hip-r...g-hip-surgery/

I put the Trek 930 back together this morning. I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me, so I won't. All it needed was wheels and brake levers and cables. I'm decidedly out of practice. The reason I did it is because the bars on the Paramount have such a deep drop that it's uncomfortable to use said drops. And I have a set of bars that I bought as part of a lot, probably ten years ago, and never mounted. Very shallow drop and very wide spacing. 48cm outside to outside. They are bigger in the center and can't use a normal stem--likely why I never mounted them. Why didn't i just mount them on the Paramount? Because it has a wired computer on it, and it seemed like it would be too big of a pain. In hindsight, maybe not. Truing up the back wheel, last thing, I discovered it's missing a spoke. My lucky day! NDS. I then adjusted the front brake cable on the 414 and, when spinning the dynamo hub, got the distinct impression that its bearings would do well by being attended to. One of the last new things under the sun for me, antique bicycle wise. I have a bb dynamo that I would someday like to set up. Someday when I have time on my hands.
The test ride will happen after lunch.

One of my mother's friend's husband had a much worse one though - he's 90 and had to have hardware from the previous fix removed for a hip replacement. He can walk the dogs several blocks now (albeit two years later).
Surgery has come a long way.

Well mine was terrible at 39, so I can see it being hard on the elderly.

Huh. I read a couple abstracts and skimmed a paper on PubMed, and a couple things popped out - Yes, Olds who fracture their hips are 3x as likely to die over the next 5-10 years. Men are more likely to di than women. BUT it's from all causes of death that normally take out old folks - cardiac or respiratory disease, cancer, etc. It makes me wonder whether frailer people are more likely to fall and fracture hips in the first place, and then lack of mobility following the fracture exacerbates their underlying poor health?
