Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

...orchard spacing is done in triangles here. So I guess if it were bigger, it might look like rows, but it's mostly done using triangular spacing of about ten feet on a side. That gives each tree about 5 feet to expand on a side, and keeps them from shading each other out. Also it tends to shading/starving out weeds, using the tree canopy.

I don't like the wormy apples, so I use integrated pest management to trap the moths, a complex system of degree day calculations, and timed spraying a few of times each season. Which is why it's called "management".

The apples and the citrus are in two different areas, because they require different cultivation routines. The people walking their dogs past here all like it. I have the impression I'm like a Central Valley farm exhibit for the neighborhood. Some old guy who still grows fruit, even though it's easily purchased from the local farmers at some of the local farmers markets.

Back where I grew up, which USED TO bill itself as the Apple Capitol of the US, the orchards are in rows, because it's easier to get tractors towing sprayers or mowers down the rows.

I'm gonna have to read up on the Brachistochrone curve. BITD in the vert skating realm, someone wondered if a simple radiused skateboard halfpipe was the best shape to use, so they built one base on a cycloid. IIRC everyone who rode it said it sucked.

Tonight I spent over half an hour on the phone with Canadian Revenue, to learn that what the guy told me the last time I called there was wrong, wasting 1.5 months in the process. SMH.

I had some Mavic pedals in the 80s. They were huge, black and yellow, and the whole pedal body swiveled. They used a cleat similar to Look/Shimano at the time. Didn't work for me because I hadn't figured out I needed pedal extenders yet.

I find grocery shopping to be pretty relaxing. If the Mrs goes she gripes and grumbles quite a bit which is tiring. She behaved herself today, though.
