Training Status??? (IV)
#2927
The race last night pushed me over the edge and I have a cough and sore throat today. I guess I'll sleep in tomorrow. It'll be raining all week though, now I'm wishing I had rollers. My wife actually prefers I spend money than ride in the rain. If I want to do up to 400 watts would I need resistance?
Really though, on my rollers (2.5" kreitlers), I can hit 400w without resistance. However I don't necessarily want to hold that, for fear of riding off the rollers themselves.. which is not the rollers fault.
The "inside ride"-type rollers would probably easier to hold higher wattage on.

1:45 on the rollers, 4*10'. so cold out that i barely even needed a fan in my basement.
incorrect. we're talking about the e-motion rollers from insideride.com, not the elite e-motion rollers. at least, that's what G and I are talking about, idk about fudgy. i really like the inside ride rollers. although if you're on a budget I was definitely able to stand on my old basic rollers and dropping tire pressure can help add more resistance. tbh, i'm not sure the insideride rollers would have been worth it to me at retail, but that's all a personal judgement call.

I'm not sure if you can get the elite emotions domestically. They license the design from inside ride for Euro sales. To my mind, having never used them, they're inferior without the bars to keep you from bouncing out when sprinting. I can do anything on these I can do outside. In many cases I can do it better indoors. The sole exception being all out sprints. I just can't hit my max wattage numbers on these, though it isn't that I fall off or anything. Once they take their Ant+ resistance unit out of beta I think these things will be far and away the best trainer available.

when I'm sprinting, which I guess is why I can't hit my max wattage. I tend to do my sprints longer on these, compensating for not hitting the big boom. smaller peak, 30 second type sprints.

Well I don't think I'll pay $900 just to sprint inside when it rains. I found an Arion mag free with broken roller, so I'll pick that up and see if I can replace the roller before I miss too much.

I managed to get out between rain showers. Did intervals 3x15. Was able to hold same power as my 3x10 intervals last month. I need to do another FTP test. I'm estimating my FTP, I've lost weight but have same power.

I can get up to 300 watts or so on the rollers with some synthetic resistance (towel under drum), but don't see myself comfortably going higher than that. The rest I do on the trainer and can get that up to plenty of watts for sprints. The inside ride look awesome, but $900 is a big cost for what little time we spend indoors in NorCal.

1.5 hours this morning, outside in the rain!
Slapped some parts on an old frame last night, now I have a bike I don't give a **** about as far as being clean, yay.

I've got rollers and a trainer. The rollers I have are the no frills nashbar aluminum version and I use them for recovery or lighter rides. I use a fluid trainer for harder interval workouts and recently started using it for sprints.

I've mentioned this before (with pics) here or in the 41: with $20 it is pretty trivial to add resistance to aluminum drum rollers that have an alloy (Fe in there somewhere) frame. Buy a neodymium magnet and stick it on the frame very close to the drums. The resistance is very natural feeling. Adjusting the space between the magnet and the drum will change the resistance. I use this setup every week for intervals.
edit: just saw the above post. My setup is even simpler, no wood, no zip ties, just the magnet.
