I know what you mean, and I've never weighed in fake-vs-real, but lordy, I would take real any day, simply because interval time stands still on the trainer. Just a micro-rest please. Just one..

It’s wild how hard ergometer work is. Lately, to give myself a break, I will pick a crowded Zwift loop and chase ghosts for 10 min intervals. Go out hard, get on a fast wheel and if power isn’t FTP or above, attack and catch someone faster. I swear it feels 10x easier then 10 min of erg at Z4 and it’s a target-rich environment when you’re as weak as I am.

I enjoy mine, I can tell you that. If you actually use your dumb trainer, as you clearly do, the smart trainer will likely be a massive improvement with no risk of it turning into a doorstop.

What I discovered this winter is that slope mode is much easier than erg mode, so most of my riding is now on Rouvy's course sims. Even workouts are easier in slope mode though, so I'm now redoing my workouts in slope mode and holding far higher power than before. Coach gave me an FTP test Wednesday.

Visuals... visuals are what Netflix is for. I have the workout on my phone so I know what's up while I watch (currently) American Horror Story.
