Sorry for the temporary thread hijack.

A couple of videos of SOTR from the past 2 years.

Storming Of Thunder Ridge : bike cam full length - YouTube

Storming of Thunder Ridge, 2013 - YouTube

I'm actually in both videos. In the first one, solid red jersey, blue bike, trunk bag in front of the camera. He passes me about 2:30 in. That is my wife and 2 kids standing on the corner at the start. In the second one, I'm in a blue shirt with a black gym bag walking out as he is coming in.

Now back to the Ironmans. I have the touch up paint now. Looking at belacqua's pictures, should the inside of the lug where the tube meets be the trim color? In his case white and my case yellow? Or does it even matter?

They are Matrix Rims. Good eye.

So, I was was working on the Ironman yesterday getting it ready for a ride this weekend. I took all of the parts off down to the frame/fork with headset and BB still on. At this point I always go to the post office about 2 blocks away and have a weigh in. The seller also threw in an 85 Miyata 912 frame/fork instead of cutting the price. The Miyata was most likely crashed and has a replacement fork. If you look at the TT long enough you might be convinced it is slightly bent....or not. Anyway, here is the point of the post.

In reading this thread evidently the frame geometry of the Ironmans are a mystery. But not so for the Miyata's. They are listed in their catalogs that you can find online. Back to the weigh in in the next post.

The Ironman is a 56 and the Miyata is listed as a 57. Miyata marketed the 9 series as their tri bikes. Here is a link to the catalog pages so you can look at the frame specs:

Miyata Bicycle Catalogs: Miyata Catalog 1985

At the weigh in the Ironman came in at 7.4 lbs. The Miyata has a black Tange Falcon headset but no BB. So I put a complete 105 BB set on with it. I had to hold it steady so it came in at either 7.4 or 7.5lbs. The BB weighed 10.4oz by the way with plastic sleeve and all parts included. I brought the frames back and began comparing them as far a geometry goes, if not identical the they are very close. The Ironman's TTis 56 CTC. The 912 is 56.5. Both ST's look to be 55 CTC or 56 CTT. Both downtubes appear to be 62 CTC. Hard to tell with the headsets in, but the Miyata's headtube appears to be a little longer. I will check when I service the headset bearings. Next post with pictures.

So here are pictures comparing the two. Also thrown in for comparison/reference is my 72 Crescent Pepita. It is included because it is a 22"/56 square frame and because it is orange with checkerboard decals! It is getting barcons so I took off the handlebars/seat/stem and rear derailleurs. It was considered a TT/all day/spring classics type of racer and not a crit type of bike. Maybe a predecessor to the 80's tri bike.

Edit: pictures are too big so I will work on that and get them posted.

In conclusion, if you are interested in the geometries of the Ironmans, the Miyata 9 series might give you a pretty close answer. The catalogs are online so you can look at them. And if you are wondering why these bikes were considered tri bikes in their day, compare the 9 series specs with that of the Team Miyata and 1000 specs. The geometry of the ironman and the 9 falls in between the other 2. Still racy, but something you can race on all day.

Barring something in the build not coming out right the Miami Vice Ironman. I am finishing the build tomorrow morning before work. Then a test ride and adjustments after work. The bike will be sporting a fc-1057 105 52/42/30 triple and 12-28 7 speed cassette. Shimano fingertip barons and a fd-6207. I'm going to see if the fd-1050 will work first. If not then the fd-6207 is one of the triple versions. The only snag I could run into is if the original rd doesn't take up enough chain on the granny ring. You can pull up the ride elevation chart if you need to know what gearing to bring.

Back when men were men. Ambitious project, though the frame will probably come out much better than you think.

And that IS one of the problems at the CoOp...folks want an easy, quick build, not one that needs a LOT of work JUST on the frame before rebuilding....I helped clean out a garage for a guy who called the CoOp, lots of Bike Stuff he said...I pulled 5 mostly whole bikes for the CoOp and some parts...but piled about 15 for the scrap man....mostly Huffys, Murrys, and no brand....LOTS of rust, as the roof was half caved in. Thinking of holding on to it and giving it some love...YIKES!

Yet another 55cm Ironman build, also with all 105. Bought something like 7 or 8 of these frames over the last two years and have been slowly working my way through them. This one needed a new powder coat and decals. SR stem and bars, fake red Regal, red Fizik tape. Very smooth:

Beautifully done! I have an original Nitto bar and stem from my Miami Vice model (if that is correct for your frame as well). Also the Vetta seat in pretty decent condition.

Scored my 1987 yesterday (May 16th 2014) from the LBS. It's been there for quite some time on consignment. Obviously has never been stored outside or chained to a bike rack.. Seat tube is not seized.
I'm pretty sure I got the bike for about the value of the NEW Continental tires that are on it.
It's my size! And from my observations today, very close to NOS.

Was covered in a lot of dust, but no cat-pee corrosion on wheels, very few little paint nicks and almost no brake pad rub on the rims, wheels are perfect true, no noticeable wear on the brake hoods or pads. Photos from this morning after a light detail.

Has had the bio-pace rings changed-out. The ones on there now appear new and are 39/53. Otherwise, except for the saddle and the new tires, it appears to be 100% correct.

Not sure how it got to West Lafayette Indiana. Was sold new at Whippany Cycle in Whipanny NJ (They are still in business at the same location) Some student probably brought it to Purdue?

Super build, and I can vouch for those saddles. I am running a black on on my Cinelli Equipe Centurion, and I did 55 miles a couple of days ago on it, very nice, not heavy. I'm just hoping the Regal I ride this weekend will treat me as well.

That place must have sold a ton of bikes, as I've had one here in NC, too. Great score. I have some Sprinter tubulars that color.
You are going to like that ride.

Holy Grief! So many great looking Ironmans....Here's my humble Miami model. I was off loading a deceased clothes dryer at a metal salvage yard a few years back and spotted this frame in a pile of dozens of bikes ready for the crusher/furnace. Paid 'em a HUGE $5.00 for it. Only had the 105RD, shifters, and fork attached...but I was "plenty ok" with that!

Grabbed some parts out of the shed later on and it made a wonderfully functional, fast, smooth and comfortable bike. I will at some point put all the right parts on it, but I'm in no hurry.

Hey ING and all,

Some one in the Phoenix metro has a blasted frame (Ironman) and parts (600's) listed on Craigslist. The parts and frame are on separate listings. Maybe one can save this thing????

I've seen that listing on there for some time....too bad he stripped it down the bare steel.

There is another one listed 56cm Miami Vice, $300.

New here. Recently acquired a Centurion Ironman Expert frame and fork (red and white, size 52cm). It'll be modern, will be building it up with Shimano 105 5700 (2x10) since I already have that group set on hand. Wound-up carbon fork and chris king nothreadset as well, threadless with compact oversized drops. I hope this won't offend you guys too much. I was debating whether or not to put 10 speed indexed DT shifters... but I don't want to give up my STIs so they are staying. I am hoping to finish putting the bike together in the coming weeks

Edit: I believe it is a 1987 because of the "expert" designation and the unicrown fork, but the bottom bracket suggests it is a 1986? Would someone clear this up for me?

Seatpost clamp bolt removed but I'll put it back later.

just like cars, a bike "model year" usually starts before the end of the calendar year. they have to manufacture next years models and have them ready for the show room before the end of the year, so the manufacture year and the model year aren't always the same.
