Hey everyone. I'm back to the forums after some time away from biking and becoming a bigger clyde (5' 10" 310 lbs) . Previously I was bike commuting to and from work but that's not an option after I moved. Now I'm getting back to riding with my kids and just replaced my old Specialized Hardrock with a Marin Muirwoods last weekend. I have to say it feels great to be back on a bike. I waited way too long to replace my stolen Hard Rock. Now I'm just trying to figure out what mods to make on my new bike.

Still a clydesdale, but less of one these days. I was clipped by a Jeep 2 years ago and while I wasn't injured, it really interrupted my will to ride. I've dropped 40 pounds with strength training, minimizing carbs, and a lot of walking. I now find myself at 205 pounds. I got back on my vintage Motobecane this morning and did 20 miles at 14mph. Very pleased with my ride and I'm glad to be back on the bike.

Reintroducce myself

Hello all! My name is Tom and I've been away for way too many years, so I felt a new introduction is called for. When I originally posted here, almost 15 years ago, I weighed 370 lbs. Right now I'm 310 lbs (6'2") and hoping to lose another 80 or so as my goal. My peak weight was 420 lbs, but with better diet changes and more recently a gluten intolerance diagnosis, I was able to get down to my current weight. I hope to get back to eating better so I can get to my goal.

Last year I moved a couple of states over and wasn't able to bring any of my bikes with me. So for the last year, I've been itching to get on one of my bikes and go exploring. Earlier this summer I was able to bring two of them out to Wisconsin. (In fact I live about 15 miles from the Trek headquarters).

1993 Cannondale M700

Right now this is my current ride, a 1993 Cannondale M700. My brother Chris found the frame/fork and saved it since he knew I was wanting a bike. I built this baby up with parts I hand selected; I don't think anything is original on her. She's got many upgrades (the Brooks saddle is one of my favorite upgrades). I wanted an early MTB because they 1. didn't have any suspension, and 2. were very strong frames. I wanted a solid road going bike that could handle my weight. She has been a great ride and I've never had any problems with her.

1998 Cannondale MultiSport 1000

Off and on throughout my life, I've been a competitive swimmer. It started with an age group swim team, high school, and with two different Masters teams. Since I was a swimmer and a cyclist, I've always had a bucket list item to do triathlons. My running is currently non-existent, but I found out that some triathlons offer an "aquabike" race. It is literally swim then cycle. It was right up my alley!

I had mentioned that to my brother and he said he had the bike for me. He found it on Craigslist and loved it, a 1998 Cannodale MultiSport 1000. Unfortunately it wasn't his size, but lucky for me, it was my size. He had changed it from a single speed conversion to a 9 speed Ultegra/105 drivetrain. Right now she needs a new rear wheel, as it has some damage to the braking surface when I got it. I'm also exploring my options for wider tires, as she was spec'd from the factory with 650c x 23 tires. There isn't much selection with 650c tires and I'm not really confident currently about riding on 23c tires on the streets around here at my weight.

I'm looking forward to joining on the discussions here!
