Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To my way of thinking, gravel indicates that the route is generally smooth enough to comfortably ride on a rigid bike with sub 50mm tyres

Gravel varies by region. Upper Midwest gravel is primarily limestone rock, which will be loose and chunky when first laid down, but will crush and compact the more it's traversed, resulting in a firm base and varying levels of surface looseness. You people (not just you) may mistakingly identify these roads as dirt in your ignorance.

The gravels here are made of real rock and don't break down.

Someone came up with a variation on the drop bar bike and it was designed to work on dirt. Not a true road bike, not a cyclo-cross bike, not a touring bike. This style was named "gravel bike". Instead of getting hung up on the name, most of us understand what the bike is for and when someone says "gravel bike" we know what they are talking about.

And here I thought that 'sedimentary' was one of the main types of rock. VV knows better than geologists, though.

After the locals drive their monster trucks on that freshly spread gravel in your earlier photo it'll get broken down and packed into the ideal cycling surface. Happens every day.

This is as driven over and packed down a gravel road as you're going to find here and if you zoom in you can see all the pebbles still there.

Maybe, but it seemed like you were lumping all the others in the "hate to say it" category, too.

By the way, do you ever recommend iron infusions for someone who is chronically borderline anemic, despite taking supplements?

Rarely, but sometimes. First you have to find out if the person is losing iron and fix that problem. Not all anemia is due to low iron anyway, so you have to check for the cause of anemia.

Second, if truly iron deficient, you have to find out if they have a malabsorption problem that prevents them from getting oral iron from diet and/or supplements.

If all else fails, IV iron infusions are a thing and can work.

In your case, I actually suspect you have AOCD, "Anemia of Chronic Disease" which happens with autoimmune conditions and the iron is NOT going to help that. The MTX also causes some anemia. You should discuss this with your doctor/noctor.

That's a dirt road, at least that's what they call them where I grew up. If there were a lot of those within 10 miles of my house, I'd want a gravel bike. There aren't, though.

Probably. The witch doctor doesn't discuss this issue. The last one said to take supplements.

The noctor I saw last week is asking if I want to be "referred to hematology." Would you bother?

Maybe. Did you get or have ordered an iron level and TIBC?? That, along with your iron saturation % (which is calculated as iron/TIBC but make sure units are correct) would give a better answer.

The answer is in the first sentence of the post you quoted. When I take a ride on my gravel bike, I will call it a gravel bike ride, regardless of the specific surface material I'm riding on. Similarly, a ride on my mountain bike is a mountain bike ride, regardless of whether or not I ride in the mountains.

There are some of us who enjoy the "underbiking" aspect of riding a gravel bike on terrain that would be more efficient to ride on a MTB. There is a limit to how far I will push that boundary, but the challenge of handling demanding terrain on a bike not totally suited for it, is exciting. It also makes me a better rider on all my bikes.

I *****ed about riding on chipseal with 23c GP4000S2s. I gladly rode on gravel with 40c tires at a third the pressure.

My next plan had been a "road" bike that would accept 36c road tires for exactly that reason.

Sent a DM. I'm in oversharing territory and this is probably not an issue anyone else here will encounter.

They're regularly called dirt roads in the vernacular, but it's composed of gravel (probably class 5). True dirt roads turn to mud and muck in the rain - in which case even a typical passenger car may have trouble - whereas gravel roads are fine in rain, snow, whatever.

The difference between gravel and dirt was pretty apparent in the Unbound this year - an early section of dirt was mudified and sunk a lot of riders.
