Subconsciously performed a Rapha bidon flip after grabbing my seat tube bottle today. I flip pedal wrenches at work a lot so muscle memory must have got to me.
Guess I have to turn in all of my Gore kit now

I recently found out a local ophthalmologist is a road cyclist, so I invited her to our Sunday ride. She rode safely and seemed to enjoy the experience. She has a Wilier that is tiny. I guessed its size as a 48 and I was right! Maybe I can get one of those circus sideshow jobs….guess your frame size. Or not.

She seemed disappointed and slightly miffed at me.

At 170 cm, every bike that I ever owned has had toe overlap. No big deal.
The toes of my shoes are scuffed terribly, especially the right one because that’s the one that I leave clipped in at stops.
Reminds me, I need to polish the toes of my riding shoes.

There is a woman who has been riding with us for a while and she is around 5 feet tall. We were stopped and people were discussing her bike and another woman who had opted for 650 wheels on her custom Moots. The subject of toe overlap came up and she didn't know what it was or if her bike had it. I showed her how to check and she had it, bigly.
She seemed disappointed and slightly miffed at me.

So, I’m polishing my riding shoes and my wife asks me what I’m doing. I explained that I’m spiffing up in case I’m needed to read the Thursday Ladies Ride. Getting a haircut Wednesday, too.

I rode with a lady with a custom Ti frame and 650c wheels. She wasn’t fast but she was a high mileage rider. She did at least two trans ams.

She was reasonably fast on climbs and could tuck in behind anyone on the flats but it was on twisty descents where she could really fly. The joke was if you tried to draft her all you would feel was a little less wind on your legs.

The lady with the Moots is about 4'10", I think. She quit riding to run a restaurant which surprised everyone. She said she would have preferred 700C wheels because of more choices of tires and wheels and the weird gearing caused by 650.

It is a bit of a self-perpetuating phenomenon, of course - nobody buys bike with 650s because there aren't enough tire choices, the gearing is weird, etc, so nobody bothers to make tires or rational gears because nobody buys bikes with 650s.

I have occasionally seen truly amazing deals on tires, only to discover they were 650s.

The madone overlap is pretty significant, which I found out the hard way. Luckily I didn’t crash, but it was close. Riding through W&M right after my first crash on it, a car stopped enfront of me, I didn’t unclip thinking he was gunna go. I turned my bars slight to help me balance and caught my foot. I looked like an idiot tryin to unclip before I fell. Crisis adverted.

I know small frames are notorious for toe overlap, but the Habanero sure has it (maybe because it's quite short in the top tube), it's really a non issue once you are aware of it and know to ratchet and not pedal through when you are turning the front wheel and going super-slow. I still recall the first time I noticed it in a parking lot...scared me for a second, and then I realized, toe overlap....duh.
