I have no problem immersing a Shimano cassette in water, and have done so a number of times. There is nothing in the cassettes that would be damaged by water. I would not boil the spacers though as they are easy enough to wipe clean.

The story, as I heard it, was that way back in the day Pete Rozelle asked for volunteers to play on Thanksgiving along with Detroit who had been doing it for years. The only team to volunteer was the Cowboys, and for that bit of sacrifice they were awarded with the very successful Thanksgiving game forever. The window of opportunity was open to all but everyone else took the safe route, and now that window is shut forever.

Stupid Question of the day: Shimano 12 speed knowledge
As I was drying my cassette, the larger rings specifically, I thought I saw something fall out of the corner of my eye. I looked and saw a very thing spacer on the floor. I looked at the back of the cassette and it had some indication like gluish tape residue and this spacer had similar residue. It didn’t have any splines.
Anyways I put it on and put the bike back together. I have not lived the chain yet, and I ran it through the gears. It shifts through all the gears no skipping but it’s not shifting smooth. Could that because the chain is dry?
Is this spacer required or suppose to be there?

boiling a cassette (or a chain) sounds like a lot of work. why? I only remove my cassette to put a new one on. is that like a wet climate thing? I'm part of the wax brigade but I don't mess with any of that stuff. It's too much work.

It was covered in wax. I’ve only had to do this once before, it’s not a normal thing. I was already going to boil the chain so figured what’s another minute to remove a cassette and toss it in.

weird. Ive done paraffin for years (recently MSW diluted with paraffin) and never boiled a chain or a cassette
edit: I should add that I full clean my bikes about twice per year w degreaser solution and an auto sponge, drivetrain brushed with a more concentrated solution. maybe that is enough to remove buildup? idk. the only thing I modified with waxing was an initial overnight chain de greaser soak (very concentrated)

also this is beginning to turn into the waxing thread. that's fine with a post (or four), but if you wanna see how much of a mess that has become, just check the thread lol

I thought 1981 so I looked it up and it was 1982. I remember Ken Anderson took a beating from the Niner pass rush. I was working at a small garage (for a couple weeks) with 3 other mechanics and none of them spoke English. The Monday after the game there was a copy of Hoy, or some Spanish paper, and I was looking at the story of the game and there was a picture of Anderson sitting on the field after getting sacked. The guys started teasing me to see if I was actually reading it and I tried to read the caption of the photo and they were impressed, (mildly).

I was talking about a SRAM one piece cassette. As for chains, I've never boiled one of those in my life, either. Then, again, I haven't waxed a chain since 1982 or 83 so I'm not up on cleaning metal parts in boiling water.

it's just not necessary Bam. You could have just cleaned it with Dawn and a scrub brush. It won't hurt anything but you are taking things too far. It's chain lube not brain surgery.
