Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I cook my rice in a pot, even in households where a rice cooker is available.

It's drying out in Flag!

I replaced a toaster oven with a proper toaster and got **** for it from the family. Toaster ovens make lousy toast, unless you have a hankering for bread that's totally dried out before it even starts to brown.

When you're really serious about toast, you butter some bread and throw it in a med heat cast iron skillet, wait a couple minutes, flip it, wait another couple minutes, then enjoy.

It's raining. I was getting ready to hop on the town bike. Oh well. At least I got the mowing done this morning.

On his borrowed gravel bike he fell during the epic 1,000 feet per mile mountain climb. Banged up a knee.

I fell on monday during my epic mountain ride. 27 percent grade I was barely moving and having to swerve to get up this section. I swerved too far right and got stuck in a rut and fell to the left hard. I did everything to protect the bike, it wasn’t mine, so took the brunt of the fall on my left knee and chest. Knocked the wind out of me. The left left leg is the leg I have the swelling issue . I have been on a diuretic which has helped tremendously. Most days now my leg looks normal. Since the fall the swelling came back. Not sure if it’s a coincidence or related.

Wow, I don't even think there are that many countries recognized by the UN

I also thought country codes were all two digit, but I could see how that wouldn't work well with 200ish countries...

Hmmm. Someone needs to do a YouTube video on this

Mrs John cooks rice in a pot and does it very well. Her sister offered her a rice cooker. I asked "wtf do you want that for?" She was convinced it would make her rice better. It didn't, so now the rice cooker is taking up space in the kitchen.

I have a slow cooker (crockpot), toaster, sandwich press (2 different types), a waffle machine and bread maker. The waffle machine hasn't been used in a long time. The sandwich pie maker neither. The others get used reasonably periodically. The slow cooker is used more in winter.

I've also discovered that using the slow cooker while I'm working from home is a form of refined torture. Dinners smell amazing well before the meat is very tender.

Neighbor just let us know the peacock is back. We were talking about how we haven't seen him in a month. We all thought something bad happened, but he has returned.

I was thinking about getting a sandwich press when The Older Boy's then-girlfriend offered us a Lodge cast iron square grill pan. I made a number of panini using that, and a heated 9" cast iron skillet on top. They were good! But also very caloric.

One benefit of the rice cooker is the keep warm feature. So tonight’s batch is fresh and warm for tomorrow too. I suppose that’s mainly for those who have rice as a staple.

Just one? We have an ostentation of peafowl that live about a block from us. Loud critters, they are. We have had the occasional individual visit our yard on a couple of occasions, but not for very long.

More peaches. We are trying to give them away, we have so many and they are at peak today and tomorrow. We easily have another 25-30 pounds still on the tree.

Just one here although there are more a few blocks away. This guy has been here at least 5 years and he's very friendly with us and the 80 year old neighbor.

They only make that noise during spring, their mating season. In the middle of summer all the tail feathers fall out and they are quiet until the next spring.

It is the correct side to fall on. Chapeau!

I smashed my knee pretty good riding my mountain bike a few months ago. Took maybe 2 months before it felt normal again. I've got a pretty sweet scar now - in hindsight I probably should have gone to a doctor.
