Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was insanely busy. It’s next to the Cherry Hill Mall in NJ. America’s first mall.

I hit Bevmo, because it was the one I came to first driving home after a bike ride, not too busy at all at 8:30ish. Rolled the dice on some brandy from Kentucky, it makes for a damn nice nog!

Yeah, road caliper in front of the fork, mini vees behind it, seems like more than enough

Pipes survived night one, though it's still well below freezing (so they're still dripping). We will call Austin Water soon to have it shut off this afternoon, and then drained with the water heater off while we're gone. Texas is stupid.

it’s supposed to be real bad on the North Shore. I saw something like predicted gusts of 70+ in Marblehead. I wish we were there this year for Christmas, I love being at our house there when the big storms come through.

I have some relatives there; they are not as thrilled as you.

Our place is on Village St at the top of the hill, it’s one of the highest spots in town, so luckily we never flood

R.I.P. Thom Bell. Songwriter, arranger and producer. One of the early architects of the Philly Sound. Probably best known for all those great hits recorded by The Spinners and The Stylistics.

We back up into the woods and we had to take a couple trees down 2 years ago. The wind has me thinking there were a few others we should’ve snagged.

Rockport/Cape Ann down the coast are getting some solid wind. Hope they keep power and make it through this without a scratch.

Early quit around noon, noon-ish, which I interpret as 11:30-ish. It's raining lightly again. Freeze supposed to hit this area between 12:00 and 2:00.

It is. We love it there and don’t get out there enough. Wife and I had our “reception” in Essex 8 months after we eloped in Chicago.

The one thing I don’t miss is commuting into Boston from up that way. 90 minutes to go 13 miles on a good day.

My place was packed on Wednesday, even before noon. People had that holiday frantic edge about them like it was New Year’s Eve, especially in the whiskey aisle. I was thrilled to grab a Pikesville Rye which is usually hard to find . . . Merry Christmas to me!

I headed north into town an hour ago, and saw the cloud bank approaching. People are all freaked out that it will go down to 59F tonight, even though that is normal for this time of year. Excitable news from up north gets people here excited. The coasts are expecting heavy winds and high seas. Inland it will be same old same old. But we have to freak out anyway, I guess. I plan to ride this afternoon, barring rain

I get it - I lived in Hamilton briefly and the train and the car were both bad!

Hose bib froze. Thawed it with hand warmers and space heater and got it flowing well, so to my understanding nothing broke. Why we're getting the water shut off before we leave though. And Texas remains stupid.

We had a cold snap back in about 1990 when we were living in SF. It was in the high 20s overnight in The City, but in the more distant 'burbs it got significantly colder, and since they build for a low of about 30, pipes were bursting all over Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
