Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My wife and I rode through our hometown this afternoon and took a couple pics:

The weather was perfect.

Work with me here.
Two Smog stations said they got some warning like 'Cat not ready' or something. They said maybe somebody disconnected the battery and she just needed to drive it on the freeway so it would reset. So last weekend she went to visit her friend in SF, 20 freeway miles away. Tuesday we took it to the Toyota dealer who had the car for a few hours, and told us

That's what I know. Apart from the fact that apparently catalytic converters have an average lifespan of 100,000 miles and these have gone 133,000. Also that Toyota doesn't make them anymore. Also that the ones my wife found on Ebay are not legal to install in California. You have to forgive me. My automobile knowledge barely covers points and plugs, and putting Dexron in the dashpots of SU carburetors.

In most places that are flat, there can be fearsome winds, so either it's great till you turn around, or it sucks till you turn around, or you get blown into traffic one way and blown off the road the other.

(It is windy AF here today, and I foolishly took my most wind-susceptible bike, the Bianchi. A couple times it tried to get out from under me, and I ended up pushing down on the leeward side of the bars, and one spot I had to put all my weight on the leeward pedal. Shoulda taken the Ritchey.

My preferred ride is flat(always flat) headwind outbound, tailwind inbound. That's the one I rode today. Such a treat to finally turn around.

I generally do better in the wind against other riders than I do in the climbs even though I am not aerodynamic.

We're like paperweights. We don't get blown around so easy.

In other news, the charger that came with the car isn’t recognizing the charger and will not charge it. Good thing I don’t have to drive it much this week. SMH - early adopter.

I'll admit my knowledge of Toyota software is non-existent but that doesn't make sense to me. In GM cars, if the cats were bad the monitor would still complete, it would just set a code. Most likely only one cat would be bad enough to fail, but 2 is possible.

Any 3 cat car I know about doesn't monitor the third cat. In other words, whether the 3rd cat was good or bad would have no bearing on whether the monitor ran or passed or failed. Toyota may be different.

Lastly, shop testing of cat "threshold" is an iffy proposition, at best. Sure, if the thing is junk you can tell but if it's borderline it's more of a guessing game. I'd love to know how they say they "tested" them.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. It would be great if you could run it by a sharp Toyota specialist. The dealer might be right but a dealer will sometime tell you whatever they have to to get rid of you. They won't install aftermarket parts? Any dealer I've worked at will if the OEM stuff isn't available or sometimes just to save the customer money if the OEM parts are too pricey.

Now You Know Who will be all over you about getting your car from out of town.

Wait. I can say his name. It's not like he's VeloVoldemort.

Spent an hour and a half trimming bushes and a cherry tree at an easy pace and I was wiped out. Only 79 degrees and 38% humidity.

Looking like I'm going to need surgery to fix my nerve issue if shot #3 doesn't work. If so, I'll easily be out of commission until mid September as this all plays out so slowly.

We were descending with strong winds yesterday and I was getting pushed around a bit. My friend had a deep section Zipp on the front but he said his weight made it easier to deal with it. He's also a lot shorter than I am and has a much lower position on the bike even though he's not a lot lighter.

Have you tried walking activities to remain in quasi-shape?
