Why I will never buy a TREK.

I raced an OCLV road bike, and rode through the Andes in a 6500 because I got them for free, the bikes are fine, but the reason I don't like Trek is because they are headquartered in Wisconsin, which is close to Iowa, and Iowa is, well, Iowa...

I have already two old trek mountain bikes , one 6500 slr (2006 model) and one 6700 slr (1999 model), I also have a 2300slr road frame (1999 model) and a fuel100 MTB zr9000 full suspended frame (2001 model)which are going to be assembled. I bought these as frames alone and I am buying the different parts to get those assembled and up to my expectations. The frames I bought were fully made in the USA and are very durable and light compared to what some competitors proposed with easton aluminium tubes prone to cracking. I will never buy a new Trek for many reasons. I liked their 1994-2006 range of products but after that not anymore.

Trek turned the best local bike chain in Portland into Trek showrooms. Places where you used to be able to wheel any bike in, get it fixed or buy parts to keep it running. Now it feels like trying to by old VW parts at a Tesla dealership. (My repainted '83 Trek frame that is my fix gear workhorse would be neither recognized or welcomed.)

The takeaway from this thread is people who are least likely to buy a new premium carbon bike will not purchase a Trek!

According to the dictionary, anyone that wants to go fast should not buy a Trek.

I am curious what mythologies I am crafting here? I do enjoy writing fictional stories and poetry but nothing to do with any of the topics being discussed here. I really don't think any of my fictional works have even been marginally cycling related.
They did do Lemond dirty, heck they did the Gary's dirty but ruining their product and killing off the lines. Bontrager's bikes were awesome bikes, while I don't think they did him dirty so much they certainly got rid of some great bikes.

Wait are you calling me a Trek apologist? Seriously? The first part of what you quoted from me was "I dislike Trek" and if you read what I actually wrote you would have seen I am not standing up for L.A. or standing up for doping but I am saying a bike company was not responsible for that and while it is wrong in normal context in the context of the time it was OK for those who did it which was much of the pro peloton. I am also not disliking Trek because L.A. used their product and again if you read what I wrote you would see that clearly I don't care of L.A. used the product. My dislike doesn't stem from that at all and I was quite clear.

Lance was stripped of seven TDF wins and banned for life from UCI cycling competition, but you say it was OK at the time for those who did it? “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” You’re a writer, maybe you know that one by Sir Walter Scott.

Just to clarify......my objection is to what TREK did after they knew or should have known that LA was a fraud. Rather than pursue evidence or at least consider it, they made a corporate decision to trash the truth and attack anyone who called out the fraud.

And, this is what's wrong with America. It didn't happen directly to me so I guess I won't hold corporate America responsible for their bad acts towards others. I'll just go along supporting them and enabling them to act badly toward my fellow citizens and humans. And when corporate America does something to damage you should we all say "Too bad. It didn't happen to me. You're on your own." ?
No, but this was almost 20 years ago. keep yelling at clouds, it’s good for your blood pressure.

Trek made me a steel ATB with low end components that lived for over a decade next to the house, got ridden nearly daily, cleaned annually and NEVER let me down. It finally rusted through and went to to recycling. If they still made them I would buy another in a heartbeat.
I don’t care about Elite Athletes or solid business practices or over ambitious product lines. If I cold get an outer 820 I would. I’ve got a line on an old Giant of similar quality. Maybe in 15 years I’ll be a raging Giant Fanboy.

Personally, I tend to prefer Trek bikes over Specialized. My Procaliber is a damn fine hardtail MTB, and I have lusty feelings towards the Checkpoint and the Supercaliber.
It bothered me that Trek opened a corporate-owned shop in my area, just a few miles from a LBS that has been a loyal Trek retailer for many decades. However, I've had a couple of mechanical issues where I needed bike shop assistance. Out of the 4 shops in my area, the Trek shop was the only one that could get my issues taken care of within the time frame I needed. They did good work, charged fair rates, and the people were friendly and helpful.

Your head would explode if you ever walked into Mellow Johnies in Austin. Lances bike shop and he sells Trek!
Also sells Moots, Specialized, Allied.

What kind of bike are you currently looking to buy, and what manufacturers are you looking at?

Again I not saying doping is OK, I am saying at the time in the pro peloton they thought it was OK. I think doping is wrong however I will say if the majority (87% I believe) of those involved are doping the person who wins at that race is the winner. It is not like you or I could start doing the same doping as the pros were doing back then and win there still was a lot of training and ability there even if clouded by doping. That all being said to reiterate just to be crystal clear DOPING IS NOT OK.
I am still curious how I am a Trek apologist?

True government logic, sue for 100 million, incur 12 million in associated legal costs and settle out of court for 5 million. If you call that a win I have a bridge to sell you.
