For reference I am 6ft and given I believe a 19 frame and it gives me about 1/2-1inch of clearence on my 7.1 FX. Pretty sure its a 19.

You're bike size is fine. Your bike feels comfortable on long rides. 17.5 is too small of a frame for your size. Don't worry about stand over, your riding position is what counts, NOT stand over. Wear your helmet and happy riding.

I am 5'7" (maybe a bit less) and 30" inseam. I rode a 17.5" FX. The seat was up pretty high, but the 20" was too large.

If doing mountain bike, off road riding, standover height is probably important. On road or asphalt bike paths, as long as you can reach the ground when you stop and riding position is comfortable, bike is fine in my opinion.

I'm 5'8" with 31" inseem. I have a 20" fx7.4 (2016)and my wife has 17.5 (2015).In Australia the 20" has a longer stem and wider handlebars than the 17.5. Not sure if this is the case in every market , just something to consider. When we got our bikes a couple of months ago I couldn't feel much difference between the 2 but having done over 1000km on my bike our feel cramped on the smaller bike. Torso length is equally important to standover height. After all the majority of the time you are sitting not standing over the bike.

I purchased a Trek FX 7.2 Disc in 20" in July of this year. I am 5'9" with 30" inseam, and the only change I have made in geometry is to install a longer, but same degree rise stem. A smaller size to me would have meant less seatpost height adjustment. I tried the larger framed model, but it didn't work for me in terms of standover height.

In road bikes, my size is 53cm, in hybrids and mountain bikes 19.5" and 20". A 21" would be pushing it, but that size is rare. Just adding my comments, as I also own 7.2 FX.
