Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I follow the marketing on this, ventilation is achieved by taking air in at the front of the helmet, right? If that's the case, won't the sunglass attachment kill the airflow at the front of the helmet?

I think I would like riding with one, but I'd pass simply because of the tan line you'd get across the middle of your face from the visor.

Isn't a duck's ass pretty aero and hydrodynamic?

I would love to try one. I love late 80s and early 90s bikes, I just as well have a helmet to match.

I thought the same thing until I saw the video. Watch at 2:27 you can see what appears to be three cut outs on the visor, likely positioned right where the helmet's vent channels are. Now, will there still be sufficient air flow through those cut outs? You'd have to hope Giro did enough air flow tests with the visor on to be sure of that.

I wonder how much more aerodynamic the helmet really is.

Any specifics on who makes the "optical shield"? I don't care to swap out my Oakley ballistic grade prescription lenses for some cheap $40 piece of plastic.

Agreed. Plus the awesome sunburn pattern on the forehead when you forget sunscreen. I'm a bit surprised its only $200 to be honest.

Carl Zeiss Vision makes the optical shield.

You beat me to that punch. I just don't get hot in bike helmets.

Looks like someone cut a big black tennis ball in half and added a hockey visor.

The whole idea is to decrease drag by having fewer vents. Most of what makes TT helmets faster is the lack of vents.

I wouldn't be suprised if this helmet catches on that Oakley makes some Lance Armstrong visors for this helmet. Similar to what they do for football helmets. Carl Zeiss is independant of the luxotica group though (they own almost every sunglass/optical brand). Luxotica owns Oakley.

Yea, I agree. Most helmets look like they were drawn by a 15 year old who's really into Japanese animation. Plus it doesn't surprise me that all those spiky bits helmets commonly have aren't the best for safety. It seems to me like I want my head to kinda roll and/or slide if I crash, not catch on a spike and yank my head off.

These new designs seem a little more like something an adult would wear.

When theses hit the shelves they will be begging for personalization.
Does this mean I have to get back into helmet painting? Decal sets will be easy to create so rather that.

The destiny of this thread is to be moved to the A&S forum, where it will be discussed ad nauseam and become so lengthy that they will run out of page numbers.

Now, with that said: Wear your helmet, even if it is shaped like Sputnik.

Yes, it sucks for cooling. Tried it at a booth at interbike last year. It was still a prototype and was claimed by the rep to be the offshoot of a time trial helmet with a cut off tail. It had this scoop looking thing at the front in between the visor and the brim of the helmet, to help with the ventilation a la Specialized, and channels up and over the head out to the back.

It caught our attention because of the visor and thinking that it is a new TT helmet.

So they let you ride with it outside for an extended period of time? Enough to get a sweat going. If it was a prototype then might have been changes since then. I don't remember any pictures of this helmet back then? Especially since sites like tri-rig focused on these style of helmets Casco and Kask versions at interbike 2011.

Post some pictures if you have them so we can see if they have made any modifications.
