Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Short ride today but still as nice as it was yesterday. About 80 for a high with puffy clouds around. Supposed to be 103 Saturday.

An employee of one of our parent companies was named Becky Peed. I have to imagine she got teases a lot as a child.

I once worked with a guy named Carl Schmuck. He took his wife’s name when they got married.

I currently work with a Schmutz.

Just came back from a consultation at a local cycling boutique. I brought my bike and told them my story and how I really love my Habanero but interested in a new bike that would accept wider tires/disc brakes, etc., that I am open to crabon fiber and even steel along with Ti. They listened and suggested three options:

1. Custom Ti made by Enigma, a UK frame builder.
2. Custom CF made by Deanima, an Italian builder.
3. Custom steel by Scarab, a Colombian builder

All three are viable and of course all are pricey.

I spent about 40 minutes there. They changed me $75 for the “consultation” which apparently would be credited if I buy from them. I was a little taken aback by the charge, as it was not disclosed when I set up the visit…but I paid it anyway as people gotta pay the rent and eat.

I just charge $40 per hour, and if it is hot in the garage where all the bike stuff is we can go inside or jump in the pool.

Wasn’t there a thread somewhere where a guy had a really bad experience with Enigma?

Call Serotta, they probably won’t charge you to talk since a frame is like 7k

I don't even charge for people to talk to me to see if they want to hire me.

I find that $75 charge by a bike store to be a lot pretentious and scammy.

Not disclosing the charge is bad. Having the charge is... I can imagine high-end custom bikes getting a lot of lookie-loos, unlike lawyers (I assume) and make much less than lawyers. However, it still feels bad, even if it were disclosed.

Doesn't matter if it's high end. I might have to make an appointment to go into a Cartier, Rolex, Omega or other high end watch boutique, but I've never been charged a fee to be shown their products.

I did my short "Happy Hour" MTB ride up to Brown Saddle yesterday, It was at least 20degF cooler than last Tuesday. The grey was very welcome.

I'm not looking forward to more heat. After record-setting July and Aug, I'm ready for Mother Nature to cut this **** out.

It's a result of rampant showrooming. A bike shop can't afford to throw away that much time on spec, there's not enough profit built in to each sale to have tirekickers come in and monopolize a staff member's attention for the 20 non-sales in between.

But if they're gonna charge for such consultation they REALLY need to reveal the charge up front
