Cedar. I mean, lots of wood cost a lot more than Doug Fir, but in this case it was cedar, which is better suited to outdoor uses (more rot resistant).

Thats how I plan on teaching my daughter. Trying to get the wife on board with the balance bike, she doesn’t think it’s necessary.

good to hear!
My wife and I met a guy at a small town convenience store yesterday on our ride. He was changing a flat tire on his truck and we struck up a conversation. Turns out, he had driven 60 miles to do a gravel race course up our way. We had a common acquaintance, so when we got home, my wife told our acquaintance friend that we had met this guy, blah, blah, blah.
Our friend said the guy had gone out on his bike later that afternoon and got hit by a truck and was life-flighted to a trauma center in Springfield, IL. Multiple broken bones.
Be careful out there.

I wanted to get my boy a regular kid's bike and just pull out the crankset to let him use it as a balance bike until he was ready. The wife fell in love with a balance bike that she saw at a shop, though, so that was that.

Or are you talking about driving to a remote ride start? I rarely do that, but I could see the bathrooms being more important in that event.

Pops is getting a couple of new stents tomorrow. His bypasses are blocked. And he did have a "silent " ( their term) heart attack.
Thank you for all the kind words.

My 11am appointment was a recheck exam on a conservatively-managed spinal fractures in a little dog who was attacked by a pit bull 2 weeks ago. Several cervical vertebral fractures, all non-displaced, bite wounds, and a spinal injury which left the little dog unable to walk in all four limbs. Owners could no afford to do all the fancy stuff but honestly from the xrays I was pretty sure this dog would get better with meds and nursing care. Yay, today she's back up and walking (unsteadily) and looks great.
Best part of the story though is the owners WALKED five miles carrying the dog to bring her in for her recheck. They are out of work and have no car. But they have feet and feet got the job done.

AG yes, but even for me there's the problem that morning coffee + pre=hydration = sudden high-volume pee within an hour. Waiting until after it at home pushes the start out too late for the local climate. And yes, driving to a start is the kicker; 45' each way to either the big open roads we usually ride up north or the light gravel to the south. Even me so wouldn't want to do that without a bathroom break.

And while there are longer in-town rides that could done in theory (and people still do), road debris and traffic have made them unpleased Russian roulette affairs. The last time we did that was when AG got the 3" nail through her rim, and she finally believed me about what a bad idea the route was.

Before a ride on a hot day, I rate my pre-existing thirst on a level of 1-10, and then take a corresponding number of gulps of water from the sink / hose.
