Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Last month, ShopRite near my office was stocking Halloween candy. Today in Macy’s a worker was assembling and decorating Christmas trees.

thanks.
If it's a actual event where you might be standing around for a while before the start, this is what the VA running community does. Let's say you and the better half are doing the Christmas Town run or the SurfNSanta at the beach. You go to Goodwill/thrift store or go through your closet and get something like a overcoat, nightgown, etc for cheap/throwaway. You wear it to the starting line. Right before you start, you discard it on the side of the starting line. Most, if not all of the fall/winter races in VA collect the discarded clothes at the race and donate them back to the local shelters.

My Briggs story: My second car was an International panel truck. Worst car ever and I became friends with a mechanic at the local International dealer. When I couldn't deal with it anymore I sold it to him. His name was Dan Briggs. That was in 1972.

I met my ex in 1990. Her step father was named Dan Briggs. The Dans were not related.

There was a guy on my race team in the '80s that was named Dan Briggs. Must be a semi-common name.

cool. thanks Ill let the wife know. That will save some money, I was pushing her to buy a gore jacket…..

I’ll do group rides, but I am going to stick to the B group for a little bit. I can’t afford to crash again, and the D-measuring contest has officially gotten old.

If you decide you need one, go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx. They'll have last year's stuff for cheap. Or hit one of the running brands outlet stores at Prime Premium Outlets. Go in and check their clearance racks for deals. Good neck gaiters, gloves and ear coverings will be more important than a jacket. For actual events, get cheap craft gloves that you can discard on the course when your hands warm up. One of the best things about running is your kit doesn't have to match. The colors might have to somewhat match, but that's it.

If you have to do an event with the wife for support, do the Surf N Santa. It's a laid back, family friendly event that allows strollers. I don't remember if the Christmas Town 8K allows strollers. Both are fun runs for the season.

Modest proposal: Transport earth from the barren, uninhabitable west (e.g., Wyoming) and create more East Coast.
