Mrs BD did the organized ride a couple years ago. There's no way I could have survived the July heat for 400 miles.

You wouldn't if you had five driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.
I was thinking about this the other day. For the last few years I haven't been nearly as frisky and wanting to do rides. I have to work myself into the mood to do longer ones. I attributed it to fatigue, anaemia, whatever.
But this now is happening with car trips too. If I start thinking about how long a drive will take, that makes me feel tired, too.
It's a problem.

My kid drove around town in a Ferrari 488 Spyder when he was in Maranello a couple years ago. Still talks about it.

So, last week. I ordered a new saddle for Mrs. Peel, because the old Concor Superleggera was putting a bit of pressure where I didn't want pressure. While I was waiting for it to arrive.....
The Superleggera has solid aluminum rails, and I understand this is what happens to them. Ah, well. Good thing I already ordered the replacement.

I've now joined the Speedplay club. Keos are just too annoying to ride in a more traffic heavy environment.

I dropped the bike off with a frozen brake pad retaining bolt on the Saturday of a long weekend.
I called on Tuesday and was told the bike was “on” for Friday. FIne; whatever.
I called Friday at noon. Guy says he’ll check and call me back.
I called an hour before closing time. Different guy says, “Ahhh, no, we didn’t get to it.” Because it’s hydraulic, they have to get their “hydraulic guy” to look at it. Maybe tomorrow.
I decide simply to replace the caliper if I finish destroying the bolt and drive through rush hour traffic to get the bike.
I get to the store and the first guy I speak to says, “Oh yeah, I took care of that” (he must have been the “hydraulic guy”) and, lo, it’s fixed.
He rings it up and it comes to $3.50. I say, that can’t be right, but he says that’s it. I interrupt to look at some merchandise, feeling it would be unethical to pay that little. Then the other guy rings it up and it’s 13 bucks. Still a steal, so I buy an CO2 chuck.

I find that my LBS generally underestimates how long things will take, and I think a lot of that is drop-ins. It takes a few minutes to true a wheel or adjust a headset, but if you do those things While You Wait, you're not working on the bikes customers left for bigger jobs, which delays them and potentially pisses them off, but doing things While You Wait makes customers more likely to keep coming back. Plus if you love bikes and riding and talking to people who also do, chatting with customers is fun, and also keeps them coming back and maybe dropping some coin on a new bike. Finding the right balance must be really hard.
I'm really glad I don't run my own business.

My brother-in-law used to have a fancy sports car and one time he went 100 (maybe 200?) miles to drive it at a track.

He once took a class at Laguna Seca race track where they provided open wheel cars with rotary engines. After some practice laps and classroom instruction the students got to chase the instructor around the track. The instructor was a pro driver in a modified VW Golf and they couldn't catch him.
My brother said it was a blast.
