Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have no disillusion that crashes aren't going to happen in any form of riding. I'm totally nervous about the fact I may crash and hurt myself or even worse...my bike.

the more I think about it, the more excited I get. I just want to get the first one out of the way.

If you do all of the work you'll have your ass handed to you at the end, let the hot shots do the work and then sprint out there at the end.

My first crit had 1 crash.
My first road race had 3, and one of them was pretty serious with a couple broken collarbones, broken bikes, etc.
My second road race had about 9, not sure how serious as this time my goal was simply to finish and didn't bother with the pack.
Been doing strictly crits since then, there have been 2 or 3 crashes, but nothing more than a slideout with road rash and never involving more than 1 rider. Luck I guess?

*Not doing only crits due to the crash record, just circumstance.

at natz this year, two guys ran straight into each other while going up hill, there was another crash during the feed zone, and lastly there was a really bad crash after a decent. the crit had 2 crashes, but they were much tamer than the last crash of the road race. Road race crashes are generally a lot worse than crit crashes!

Watch these photos as a slideshow; its an eye opener. Coupla guys go down and then all hell breaks loose. Suddenly you got guys going onto the grass verge and ripples of crashes off both sides. One guy ends up somersaulting into a fence.

I'm trying to figure out what the **** is. Not sure what would go between "degenerate" and "waffle"---and I've never heard waffle used as an insult.

urban dictionary has a definition that involves closing a laptop after defecating on the keyboard.

OP, I have two suggestions for you:

1. Get there early so you have plenty of time to hit the Porta-Potty (Pre-race jitters frequently lead to long lines.)
2. If your race is late in the day, be sure to have your own roll of toilet paper - cause they Porta Potty's are frequently out.

as an insult waffle usually follows a four letter term used to describe ladybits that begins with a t and a w and ends with at. I hope I haven't violated the family friendly censors.

Pretty sure he was in the garage with 2ndGen chopping his post and upgrading the cockpit bling. After dusting for fingerprints under the chain stay cover.

Or dropping Freds with major wattage. And the Speed Weapwnry.
