Sometimes fads come and go. Not saying 1X setups are necessarily a fad, but for some they sure are/were. Some folks looked at every opportunity to switch. Same as what happened when many stopped using triple chainrings up front and converted to compact doubles. The manufacturers followed suit, or maybe it was the other way around?
There was also a time when I became enamored by SS/FG bikes and every bike on Craigslist was evaluated based on its potential to be changed to a single gear setup. Thankfully I recovered from that malady.
And then there's a youtuber I follow, Path Less Pedaled, who recently posted a video about why he is going back to doubles after spending a good amount of time with 1X setups. The decision wasn't based on aesthetics, but performance.
Some of us make decisions based on how things look, and I'm as guilty as any. To me, some 1X setups look good, some not so much. Putting that aside, what should matter more is how the approach works to provide the proper gearing and reliability in performance. Path Less Pedaled decided that going back to double chainrings would suit his needs better and so he is switching back.
I think the bike pictured looks great for a variety of reasons including the 1X setup. But if I rode it would I be happy with the overall performance? Maybe, but then again, maybe not.

My pet peeve is with posters who brag about his/her "involvement in the sport since 19xx." As if such a statement makes the poster a source of undeniable gospel expertise and anyone who doesn't follow her/his exact guidance, a poser worthy of his/her public ridicule and scorn.

Just to let the thread know, I run triples and barcons on most of my bikes. Racing bikes, sport tourers, etc, etc. That might be a pet peeve to others.

Wow, I had no idea that the way my bikes are set up was so annoying to other people. I will try to do better in the future now that I know the correct way of doing things. If you see me on the road, just look away.

Funny , I wonder the same about so many riders of modern -- and some not so modern -- bikes where the stem/bars are so high, they are in the drops most of the time... as in there's nowhere lower to go on the bars. My bars are lower than the seat so, yeah, on top a lot. But the drops are there when needed. Really handy in a stiff headwind. I guess you pick what works for you.
