1989 Pinarello Montello Cromovelato with 11 speed Campy Chorus/Athena/Centaur/CX mixed groupset.


1995 Quattro Assi Titanium with 10 speed Dura Ace 7800 groupset, with 7700 series crankset.

Edit: I just realized this thread is specific to STIs/Ergo shift controllers and my Team Miyata was old-school downtube shifters, so I removed it.

Even though it has traditional type titanium tubing, no oversize or special shaped tubing here, it is still plenty stiff and light. But it has a wonderful ride quality about it, soaking up much of the road vibrations without giving it a dead feeling. The geometry is also traditional, which I prefer and when you add the Dura Ace 7800 series components (except for the 7700 crankset which I prefer due to aesthetics) to it, you have a bike that makes you want to spend the whole day riding. I guess at the end of the day, it is just a well-made titanium frame with excellent componentry but nothing wildly spectacular - a joy to ride and different than anything else I own, whether that is steel, aluminum or carbon. William Lewis had the frames made in the US but I am not entirely sure who he outsourced them to. I know his aluminum frames were built by Kinesis, so maybe they made these as well before their production went to China.

I got some Ultratorque cranks for my Merckx MX Leader, and some clincher Shamal's for my Somec, the Merckx running 20 speed Campag the Somec 8 speed.


I saw my first daffodils of the year this week, and the sun was shining, so I decided to dust down all my sexy Campagnolo Shamal wheels and give them some vitamin D as they've been stuck indoors all winter avoiding our salty winter roads. Shamals;s assemble!!! Apart from the Somec mentioned above, everything else is running 10 Speed Campag.

BMC_Kid the ones on the Somec are the earlier 8 speed ones so they won't fit an 11, but all the others are the later 9/10 versions, which also fit 11 I think, I've never got beyond 10 speed so never actually tried.

Here is my 1984 Schwinn World Sport with the Shimano Sora 9-speed STIs I recently put on it. These units are from a previous generation with the shift cable routed externally, but I found them in good shape in the shifter bin at a community bike shop, so on they went. They work great. This conversion began because I moved most of this bike's previous 1X10 drive train to a bike it was better suited for, which led to installing a 2X Sora crank set here with the matching outboard bearing bottom bracket. I used a Sora RD because it has enough reach for the Diore 11-34T basket I'm using. Kind of amazing that current and recent generation parts work without fuss on a 40 year old bike.



Here is my 1978 Sears Free Spirit with Shimano Claris 8-speed STIs. I've had this bike since it was new and the only things still original are the brake calipers.



Here is my mid-80s Motobecane Inter Club, also with Claris STIs. There's not much original left on this bike either.

That's cool that you can get this color in a powder coat! I used Violette Pearl paint from House of Kolor on mine. The minute I saw a sample, I knew I had to paint something with it. I recreated the decals that were on the bike originally but I can't bring myself to cover up any of the pearl paint with them. Looks like you feel the same.

I recently detuned this early-90s Serotta from 11-speed Chorus to 10-speed silver Veloce/Centaur/Chorus. Also swapped out Shamal clinchers for HED Belgium tubulars with Conti Sprinters. Next in line is a Nitto silver seat post for the black Ritchey here. I still occasionally race this bicycle at a fairly low level, although it probably weighs 25% more than its nearest competitor. It was much faster with Shamals and GP5000 clinchers, but those are now destined for a 20 rather than 30-year old racer, as is the 11-speed Chorus, and for days I want to battle on a little longer before being sawn off by the lightweights…

One day I started to search for some old and interesting frame (also historically). I found Giant Cadex 980C (1989) not in great condition. The previous owner used it just like a commuter. Didn't take much care of its condition.
So my first task was to disassembly the whole bicycle to parts, clean it and reassembly with new lube. It is now not in its final look, because I'm waiting for 3TTT stem and handlebar, Campa flat downtube cable stops, brake levers will be carbon from 10S Chorus and Record shifters (custom 9S Chorus), seat post will be Ambrosio Venturi, brakes will be Campa Chorus Skeleton (need them to be rebuilt with new original springs) instead of usual Campa Chorus.

The frame was in brutal shape so I stripped it and painted a 3 color splatter.
It's really fun- quick, jumps forward, comfortable.

Great frames mated to amazing components. DA 7700 is still my favorite groupset aesthetically and arguably for the period, the best shifting and stopping. What's not to love?

It really died when the mods created an entirely new forum to address this time period, "Early Brifter Bikes", but that forum never really caught on. It just hasn't really started back up since then.

(And Dura Ace 7700 is still some of the best stuff from all time.)

Your timeline sounds right- it hasn't been nearly as popular as it was before that move.

1994 Marinoni EL-OS, freshly repainted with new decals.

Set up as a “Shimergo” 9s mix with climbing gearing, with 50-34 and 11-34. My old knees need the help for the 5,200ft climb in the background.

i still have to do some shakedown rides, and may swap in an old Kinesis carbon fork. It is 20.8lbs now, and I’d just like to get it below 20.
