Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speaking of Tucson, on my recent trip I was planning on visiting Patagonia to do some birding. But after driving hundreds of miles through the boring Utah desert on my way to Phoenix, I was in no mood for driving through another hundred+ miles of desert.

Next time. It's on the bucket list.

Also on the list is another trip to Arches National Park in Moab. My son and I were on a tight schedule trying to get to Phoenix on the evening before Thanksgiving, so we didn't have enough time to actually see any of the majestic arches that are situated further into the park. But these awesome formations are good enough for now.

Started out trying to true up my 46mm Reynolds wheels yesterday. Today I'm ordering all new spokes for the rear wheel. I had to order what I think are unbranded spokes. Good reviews. Wheelsmith and DTSwiss have lost thier minds. Fugetaboutit! 4 bux a spoke? Nope. And trying to buy them from Amazon ?...Thats a shiz show.

Man I dunno where I'd get spokes now. I used to go to Danscomp but they've been bought by A-Main since my last purchase there, so not sure if they are still the bees knees when it comes to spoke supply.

You had me panicking for a moment. That's mean $256 in spokes alone to rebuild the Dura Ace wheelset for the Ritchey. Though I may not have the patience, and might fob it off on Gebhard at my LBS.

Fixing wheels sounds like fixing appliances. Cheaper to get a new one.

Sad!

Update on daughter #2. Now that she has been home for a few days, we are able to chat and she is doing MUCH better. She had a rough few weeks after her breakup but seems to be bouncing back.

You wouldn't want a table like that in earthquake country.

I had a VERY tough time when the Not-Yet-Mrs. GeneJockey broke up with me after Sophomore year. That was a tough summer. I also got Mono. And then she came to visit in the late summer, but didn't want to get back together. Then SHE got mono.

When I say our story is a long and tedious one, this is what I mean.

Bryce Canyon is another must see. Take the hike up to Angel's Landing.

One inch thick?

Tempered is better. If you fall (I mean pushed onto it), there is far less chance of being impaled.

Get some nice 3/4" plywood. You'll never break that! You can paint it any color you want.

I've had great luck finding good deals on DT Competition spokes on eBay, usually between ~$.50-$1.00 per spoke.

Latest build was with some old Araya rims and late '70s Shimano high flange hubs and 15/16g spokes. Rims are pretty soft and have a noticeable bulge at the seam so I'll probably relace them with some Sun M13 soon-ish.
