Worst Mechanical Failure you've had on a ride

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My carbon frame exploded and caught fire under me. I didn't put enough sunscreen on it and the UV rays did it.

But really, I had my shoe miss the clip on a pair of Speedplay Frogs and my foot went into the front wheel during a cross race. It didn't end well.

Freehub seized up ... lots of spinnng, but not a lot of going forward.

Left crank arm fell off.

More flats than I can count, several with tire gashes.

Bolts loosened on cleat and cleat got stuck in pedal ... that's happened a couple times.

Shifter cable ... I'm not quite sure what happened there, but all of a sudden I couldn't shift through my cassette. There I am with about 40 km to go to the control on the first 200 km of a 1200K randonnee, and I could only shift my front derailleur. A little WD40 at the control and I was back in business.

Shifting mishap ended up with a bent hanger and my brand new RD bent up into the cassette. That happened Tuesday...

Over the years - without crashing these happened to me (vs my kid who I mostly post about):
-Alloy seatpost snapped - I've always been big
-Folded a wheel sitting on the rack.
-Blew out the side (the alloy side) of a Mavic rim at the brake pad section on the tandem. Normally ran 140PSI.
-Melted glue on Sew-up descending on tandem and tire rotated 90 degrees so I was riding on sidewall and other sidewall on rim bed.
-Lots (2-3) of tire blows
-Shifter cable broke
-Broke spokes

Kinda hit something:
-Bunny hopped the RR track and landed on the track - kinda left a big dent in the rear.
-Coming down a hill on Spinergy wheels there was a ditch - unmarked - dug under a tunnel in the shadows. The front cracked. The rear asploded. My wife was dragging and grinding down her crank and the RD was ground off. We stayed up.
-Went around corner on Hwy 1 (Big Sur) hit rocks, tire burst and wrapped in the front wheel. Spent day with doctor.
