Thank god we aren't the full lycra kit wearing fools.

As a cyclist when people are deliberately riding in front of my car and don't get over, especially when there is a bike lane as the cartoon stated, I want to run them over, too.
Not sure a cartoon rat can be convicted of vehicular homicide though. Doubt he can even drive a car really.

It's worth noting that some of the hardcore Classic and Vintage cycling enthusiasts seem to take pleasure in ridiculing and belittling regular sport cyclists whenever possible. It's almost as if they derive some twisted satisfaction from it. They even go so far as to support a cartoon that depicts a cyclist being run over. This tribalism is simply because the cyclist is wearing modern synthetic lycra rather than traditional woollen clothing. This behaviour is quite sad and pathetic.

Let's reword that: Advocates or makes light of running a cyclist over. It also makes the Lycra rider look like a raging lunatic.

You’re overreacting over a cartoon that’s popular whether you like it or not, that appears in family newspapers across the US.

I will go out on a limb here...my guess is I would not enjoy riding nearly as much with the people who don't think most of these comic strips are funny as with the ones who do think they are funny. That said at least 90% maybe more of the people here would not enjoy riding with me.

This is ridiculous. Also pathetic and sad. Personally I don’t belong to any “tribe.” I own nothing but lycra cycling clothes, and don’t even own a wool blanket.

Example of a comment I was pointing out upthread.
"Ok, well that is not the case here in PDX, many of them act far superior, look down their nose at anybody who doesn't, ride and act like the MUP's are their own personal TT with zero regard for anybody else in their way."

iab, I find it very difficult to believe you don't understand what "arrogant" means. I suggest you look it up. You can do that online (not advised) or use something called a "dictionary". It is a book with a lot of words in it.
Iab, are you telling me that you have never ridden with Lycra-clad cyclists, with all of the finest equipment, riding carelessly, and/or, dangerously?
Iab, are you saying that you have never encountered a pack of Lycra-clad cyclists, with all of the finest equipment, while you are driving, who are riding in a manner that obstructs traffic, or in a manner that puts them and others on the road in danger?
iab, I know it may be hard for you, but you might try smiling. Maybe then, you will discover the humor in all of this, and maybe understand that the comics are meant to make us think, as well as laugh.![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif)

Every grievance you listed for modern cyclists holds true of vintage cyclists. And in both cases, those "arrogant cyclists" are the exception. If you comprehend that fact, you may start to comprehend of the word stereotype.
There is also no doubt you and I have more encounters with danger caused by motorists than cyclists, but I, unlike you, won't condemn the good drivers to lowbrow humor like yourself.
btw, in 2023, how many pedestrians were killed by a driver of a motorized vehicles and how many killed by a cyclist?

I never imagined any conversation with fellow classic and vintage enthusiasts would have gone this array.
of course we don’t all share the same sense of humor
but we should all show mutual respect towards one another.
please, let this thread die.

Although I committed to stepping aside I had to respond to your shock that this thread went array. A vast majority of threads which go array are C&V enthusiasts going off on whatever the topic of the day is. There is virtually no current cycling topics being discussed here anymore but rather this has become C&V forum discussing vintage gear followed by the odd “old man yelling at clouds” topic. Current tech and cycling topics have completely died off and moved on to other forums and discussion groups. To me that is to bad.

If there were a suitable counterpoint to AtlasShrugged, but with some humor, the two could do a whole Troll vs Troll strip, à la ...

I'm not sure why the Jef the Cyclist character is so awful.
Still, Pastis makes fun of himself more than any other character, I think. This comic from 2008 is just one example... (that's Mr. Pastis himself on the ground in panels 3 and 4)

I enjoy the comic, but there's plenty of others that I just don't care for. To each their own.

Their point of view is sometimes exaggerated, but that's what all comics do: shine a spotlight on some aspect of the human condition. It's not necessarily funny- sometimes it's sad, or wistful, or poignant.
For those who criticize Pastis, I can only offer up one of his strips from July:
Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for July 09, 2023 - GoComics
FWIW: I met and chatted with Jef Mallett at a Seattle Bike Show ages ago. He was fun to talk to. I missed the opportunity to chat with Stephan Pastis this last time through- I want to verify a rumor that he worked for a time around the corner from the bike shop where I learned the trade.
