Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, all the time.

I see them riding around with sora or tiagra and I'm thinking~ What a loser.

and when I see some guys on dura-ace I yell at them : POSEUR!!!
So what you are saying is, since I'm riding 105 & Ultegra, I'm the coolest on the block....

Where (rider skill) = 1 to 10, 10 being the highest; and (component level) = 1 to 5, Sora to DA:

(Rider skill) / (component level) = badass quotient

Using my own equation, and counting that my road bike's only DA parts are its 7800 shifters, my BA quotient is... um... probably 0.8.

Never the rider, only the bikes in regards to judging based on components. But you can only do that when stopped anyways and then, who am I to judge?

3/2 = 1.5 for me

Just to clarify? The better the rider and the lower the components make the highest badassery? Another clarification. on Shimano Scale (Sora/Tiagra/105/Ultegra/DA) and +1 for Di2?

Also, there is no reason an entry to novice racer couldn't do just as well on these components. And for this price could still afford beer/champagne after the victory.

Di2 counts as it's groupset.

Ultegra Di2 = Ultegra
D/A Di2 = D/A

Sure, why not -- the idea is that the better rider on the crappier stuff is more badass than the crappy rider on better stuff. Expand and adapt it to your liking.

But there has to be an extra point thrown in for the cost difference and skill required from rider dropping.

If she were somewhere between the skin tone of Thalia and Beyonse, that would be nice. Of course, her measurements would have to be approximately 38-24- 36. The middle measurement is the most important one, though. She would also have to have a lively personality and a really good sense of humor. It would also help,if she were slightly submissive. I don't want her in my face unless it's that special time ( you know what I mean). OTOH- I don't want her at my feet waiting for permission to go to the mall or hang out with friends or something. That would just get on my nerves! She would have to be very loyal or else she would cause me to do life in prison.

She would have to keep my ten commandments:

1) I will serve you whenever you want to be served.

2) I will allow you do whatever you please as long as it pleases me as well.

3) You will spend no more than 10% of my monthly salary every week as you wish.

4) You will give me a massage at least once every week.

5) We must bicycle together for at least 50 miles per week.

6) We will do something wild and crazy at least twice a week.

7) We will do something wild and crazy in a wild and crazy place at least once a week.

8) You have to let me cook for you at least once a week.

9) We must wash the clothes or do the laundry together on Sunday morning as we drink Tequila and dance to Santana.

10) We must always remember that we are promised to one another and that our personal vows to one another supercedes any other earthly rule or law.

So you see, there are many components by which to judge!

PS.

Of course, nobody gives a damn what you ride on your damned bike, as long as you can ride your damned bike!
You are obviously a man that plans ahead.

What will you look for in a second wife (assuming for a second there is ever a first wife)?

My roadie currently has DA (shifters), Ultegra (FD, RD, cassette, and chain), 105 (brakes) non-series R700 (crank), and.. uh.. the BB is either DA or Ultegra, I forget right now. That's a combination of being cheap and finding a shop liquidation sale.

The notion that someone has to be "good enough" to own high end bike schwag is absolute nonsense, jealousy, haterade, delusionist, and ignorant to boot. It's just stupid!!

Being impressed by expensive components is confined to a relatively small group of aficionados. I'll be honest about it: I couldn't tell the difference from looking between Tiagra and Ultegra - you're lucky I even know the names. Whoever swooshes past me has a "fast bike", being in control as you do it impresses me.

Jealousy mostly.

Every time I find myself wanting to bag on someone elses things, I usually think about it and it's because I am in some way jealous.

That's not even right. One of my best friends rides a decent bike but worth about 1/2 of mine and he can buy and sell me 2X's over and I ain't poor. We all judge people. Wise people however know that is a trap. For all the stereotypes we assemble with experience there is an exception that completely debunks each one we carry around with us. The guys in any sport you have to watch for the are the guys that don't show a lot of flash. You can generally crush the soul of guys who are compensating with the best equipment but even that isn't universally true. I would say more times than not the guys who ride the best equipment in the amateur ranks...in cluding guys who play golf with the latest $700 driver are average hacks...though sometimes real good players play with top level stuff. I ran into a guy in the parking lot who was complaining about his sore neck and he was on a $5k Cervelo. I told him he could flip the stem because his aggressive position was likely his root cause...that and what I didn't say...his lack of conditioning. He didn't know the stem could be flipped...lol. At that point I didn't think much of the guy until we started talking about the stock market and I am a student of the market as perplexing as it is.. He knew as much about the market as I do about bicycles. If there is one lesson in life...its you can't judge people...or if you do, you will likely be wrong.
Which begs the issue about stereotypes. How are stereotypes formed? They are extrapolations based upon limited experience i.e. ignorance. A broader view generally exposes that many if not most are false....exceptions are the norm.
