I used to do long mountain bike rides with multiple water crossing and sandy ground. Chainsuck happens often on these rides and I resorted to smearing sunscreen and even Chapstick on the chain. Started carrying chainlube for anyone who needed it. This was with triple ring cranksets.
Also, on a muddy ride the chainsuck is terrible.
To me, this is the big advantage of a 1x set up. No chainsuck in wet conditions.

I've been checking out off road bikes recently when I see them in parking lots, etc - many if not most had 1x drivetrains
one LBS near me has converted most of the bikes they maintain for a local school district to 1x drivetrains (advanced PE has MTB units)

It's got its share of redneck rancher/farmer types, but they aren't any worse than coal miners.
Cycling is actually a pretty big deal in Tulsa. Check out the Tulsa Tough for example: Tulsa Tough | Saint Francis

I don't think you'd have any problems. Tulsa is nicer than you'd think.

Despite what you hear about Texas, Oklahoma, etc., the big cities are not really any different than anywhere else. You might run into issues with isolated individuals and in small towns, but that's about it. Same with politics for the most part - there is a difference between rural and urban areas just like in Pennsylvania and other states.

I don't know that you would like it any more than where you are. I just don't think you would be an outcast in any way.

Mrs. GJ is still visiting in SoCal. She just sent me a Redfin listing down there. I think she's unclear on the whole "Equity Pirates" thing, not to mention what we will be living on.

The area around Gettysburg is so bad in some ways you might have thought Lee managed to successfully pull off Pickett's Charge.

Agree. I did my medical residency in Hershey, which was fine because Metro Harrisburg, but if you went into the boonies you would see more confederate flags than in Dixie.

I've mentioned before that our suburb is about 1/3 each of white, Hispanic and black, and I don't ever see any type of racial discrimination or profiling. That's not saying it's not happening, but it is not very open or obvious. I don't ever hear our black friends complaining about it. Our neighborhood is pretty affluent and also very mixed - just on our street you will find 6 white households, 3 black households, 1 Kalifornians (they deserve their own distinction ), 1 Black/Asian couple, 1 Baptist who goes by Weinstein, 2 Hispanic households, and 1 Vietnamese family. The rest of the neighborhood is much the same. Our kids went to an elementary school where the students came from families that spoke 26 different native languages. Gay or straight - no big deal.
Dallas has been very Democratic for a while, and Fort Worth seems to be moving in that direction. It'll be interesting to see what the latest news does to that.

Random thoughts...As I was rolling among on my usual Sunday group ride, I was reminded of an observation while overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, CA sometime last year. Lots of cyclists were out, enjoying the So Cal sunshine. Lot of groups of various sizes. As I observed, one particular group of about a dozen(ish) stood out to me simply because of their formation. Most groups were some sort of random blob, or maybe stretched out with a few gaps. This one group caught my attention because they were in a orderly and tight double line. They weren't going exceptionally fast, but there was a calm smoothness to the group that was vivid. There was little doubt that this was a group of high-quality, experienced riders, most likely with a history of racing,.

Over 100 here today. Tomorrow's ride should be interesting. One of the women hates the heat and she has spent the last several weeks up at 8000 feet so she is not acclimated at all. I don't know why she agreed to come. I'm hoping TPTB will pick a nice, easy route.

Whish is sad, because since I grew up there, I feel a tug on my heart when I see things like the Battlefield, or the orchards, or the way the houses just sit right ON THE STREET. It's the place the feels like Home in a lot of ways but I don't think I could stand living there.

OMG. Really bad crash on the Southwest Chief today. Train hit a dumptruck, and it kinda looks like every single car rolled over on its side.

Hot. It was about 90 with high humidity for yesterday’s century. It ended up being a ride of attrition. I felt great at the end but I don’t mind the heat, the few that finished with me were not looking strong, and we shed a lot on the way. We started with 20 riders and ended with 4.

The DFW area is a huge melting pot of different races, religions, sexual preferences, cultures, etc.

Our town is almost entirely brown. Very little diversity.
