Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedaling would tighten a freewheel (which you C&V guys use) but most modern bikes use a cassette. Different. The cogs sit on a freewheel body and outside part of cassette screws on and holds everything in place. So it DOES need to be on tight. Shimano suggests 40 N-m.

Rode my Trek again yesterday. Did some more fit tweeking on it. That is a smooooooth riding platform. And it operates so quietly. Only 24 miles or so but it's a good workout. My seasonal depression is in full bloom, making it difficult to motivate for anything other than sleeping. I was thinking about raising my vitamin D dosage but I don't know if that's a good idea.

I don't often ride on MUPs much, but when I do, I like to warn people with a loud hub.

Pretty easy for me to chew gum and watch someone build a wheel.

Have a great ride. I'm going to try and take a day off. I'm tired.

I'm going off pavement this morning. After I tighten that cassette, eat some breakfast and walk the dogs. It should be warm enough by then.

Nice! We do think about a trawler for when we're too frail to sail and The Loop is certainly the thing one does with one.

Anyone know their snakes of New Jersey? This guy was in the road and slithered into half hiding.

Looks like a blackish smallsnake (serpentus Newjersyensis), but it's hard to be sure from the photo.

Found a website re: snakes in NJ. Appears to be a northern black racer, which are common in NJ. Definitely was not small.

According to Shimano, it's not possible to build a wheel and chew gum at the same time.
