Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hockey game switched off as we are getting a tornado warning coming our way. It looks like it will slip by to our south. Golf ball sized hail reported. the puppy has his thunder shirt on and is calming down.

It's been raining pretty hard. No tornadoes.

Maybe I should go to bed early and get some sleep before 3 a.m.?

It's not a nap after 11 p.m., though it may end up of nap-like duration.

Are you taking prednisone?

Slept until 4 a.m. today. I may or may not get sleepy again.

Look what happened on a big charity ride I did on Saturday-

Full bottle, hit him in the arm but fortunately didn’t cause a crash. Classy people.

We are in New Orleans again for our periodic visit with Mrs. rpen's mom. She will be 96 in June. Still living alone in her own house. No help of any kind except with the yard. I was busy with the car yesterday so they went out shopping and for lunch in the mom's car. Mrs. rpen declined to drive it saying she didn't want to fool with moving the seat, mirrors, etc. The real motive was to informally test her mom's driving. Good news for everyone is that mom passed with flying colors. Defensive, solid driving. That woman is just plain amazing.

So what was I doing that tied up the car. Well my small donation to our university's College of Sciences came to the attention of the dean, and he reached out to meet with me. He arranged for me to visit the school, do a little memory-lane tour, meet with undergrad and grad students over lunch, yada, yada, yada. Wow, that was fun. I love talking to students about their work, plans, expectations.

I'm happy your MIL is driving safely and glad you guys are giving her a sort of mini-test, but I'm all for mandatory retesting maybe every year or two years for drivers above a certain age, say 80. I was nearly sideswiped by a 92 year old a while back, he literally couldn't see me because he was violating his daylight only driving restrictions (this was right at dawn) and was pretty much deaf as well.

Anyway, which school is that? UNO? Loyola? If Tulane, how's the campus looking these days? It's now going on 7 years since I visited Nola.

This raises a fair point. It certainly is risky to do a "high speed unexpected handup" by tossing a bidon at a cyclist. However, it is also risky to do a bidon flip on a public road. I've seen a fair number of cars swerve off the road and wreck after they've witnessed me performing a quick, casual bidon flip. I guess the sheer beauty of the maneuver paralyzes the drivers with excitement?

I think it did, they're working on getting a report filed. Luckily we've got some cycling cop friends who take these things seriously.
