So I'm pretty blown away right now. And not in a good way.
Wife had been working at a flower shop pre-COVID, but when everything was shut down she went back to being a nanny.
That gig is probably going to be winding down here fairly soon, and an ex-coworker from aforementioned flower shop clued her in on an opening in the office of the law firm she currently works at. Wife applied, and has an interview scheduled for this afternoon.
She wasn't really planning on going back to the floral shop once things opened up anyways since she constantly experienced being promised things that never happened, really miserable pay, and 40-50 hour work weeks. She was really great at that job but it was just soul sucking, so this looks like a great opportunity - decent pay, regular hours, weekends off, etc.
Turns out the owner of the flower shop found out that my wife has an interview at this law firm, and over the weekend stopped by to tell the person who was going to interview her not to hire her because she's going to come back to work at the flower shop. Which is an absolute lie. She never discussed going back to work there.
What. The. Actual. ****

Not sure exactly, but one of wife's best friends still works at the flower shop so she may have said something, and another old floral coworker of hers is known to be quite the gossip.
Potential future coworker at law firm (ex flower shop coworker) told my wife about it today.

If you want to see/hear financial weirdness, Planet Money just did a podcast on Hertz which is preparing to go bankrupt. The stock fell to $0.40/share and theoretically should go to zero in the near future but for some reason, individual investors started buying it up and drove the price up to $4+ in a short time. People who bought at $0.40/ a share made a bundle in just a few weeks. It's currently trading at $1.42 and should be trading at near zero. Nobody can figure out why it happened or is still happening.

Thankfully it seems like the law firm employee was quite taken aback by the whole thing.
So yeah, in a way it's quite the endorsement of my lovely wife that he felt like that's the only way to keep her as an employee, but he'd have a lot better time actually, you know, paying a living wage and following through when he makes a promise.
But that's crazy, right?

My worry was that this guy is fairly well connected in the Rockford area. He and a lot of other business owners like to do favors for one another.
Thankfully it seems like the law firm employee was quite taken aback by the whole thing.
