Where Did You Ride or Walk Today?

First day back on the bike after a couple of months off due to winter conditions. After 2 or 3 falls over a few years I don't ride on any kind of ice or snow.

So is anyone else still walking or cycling? ![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I'm still doing lots of walking and am ahead of where I was last year at this time. One of the things I'm doing is walking to university from work on Mondays. In past semesters, I would take the bus. But I started to discover that mid-day buses to the university are very unreliable. I would leave work a good 15 min before one of about three buses were due to arrive, and would be lucky to have one arrive and get me to class in time ... so I started getting out there 20 min in advance in the hopes of catching an earlier bus ... and then realised that if I was going to leave work that early, I could walk to the university and not bother with the buses at all.
So Mondays are big walking days.
I've also been getting off a stop early to get a little extra walking in during my morning commute. Or I was doing that till Easter. Since Easter I've been trying to recover from our cycling event. But I'll get back into it again shortly.

We've gotten in a lot of walking and 750 km of cycling while travelling in the last month.

Bike to the pharmacy...for Icy Hot! I had a long road ride over the weekend, took a spill, and now my body is a hot mess. It felt really good to ride just a few miles and stretch things out a bit.

Participated in student exams and other meetings all day till 3 pm. Too hot to bike back to my regular office with nothing specific booked, so I am in the library at our other site, pretending to finish a full work-day. Hope it cools off a bit by the time I have to ride up the hill to home.

Some walking statistics.
I thought I'd look back to see how I was doing this year and if I was on track. I knew I was ahead of the game early on, but a surgery in May ground things to a halt and then travelling for a month in June/July meant that we were doing more cycling and less walking. I'm pleased to see I'm still ahead of the game.
And a large portion of all that walking is utility walking.![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Walking to date 2017: 673.05 km

General shopping today. 8 mile round trip. 32lbs of fruit and veggies and still loads of room in the Arkel panniers.
The trunk bag is an insulated lunch tote with 4 d-rings on it - perfect for strapping down with bungees. I got it at a garage sale and it has served me very well for years.

I don't keep real close track of how far I walk, but average better than 20 miles a week--even though I've been enduring an arthritis flare-up in my left knee. I stop and rest every mile or two because of the pain, so my walks can take an entire afternoon. I can't ride a bike at all when I have these flare-ups, but manage to walk with much determination.

Finished my shopping today with a walk in the opposite direction. Maybe 4 miles return, first half all up hill as per usual. Here's a couple shots along the way.

Today I walked to another local farmer's market as I had forgotten to get a few things the other day during my regular shopping trip by bike. I chose to walk this time because air quality is very, very bad right now due to severe wildfires burning throughout the province. I was worried that I would breath in too much particulate by riding the bike.
By this evening however, I was getting stoved up and really needed to get the muscles going and feel the wind on my face. I loaded the pooch into the trailer and rode a couple miles to a local park so she could chase a ball for a while.

Tuckered out after a good romp ...

This past week ... walking to and from university, and lots of walking in preparation for our weekend in northern Tasmania.

I rode two different bikes today! First, a commute to work, with a stop for a few groceries on the way home. I have a new co-worker who is new to town and also rides for transportation and recreation, and we went out for a 30 mile road ride after work. It's always nice to have another crazy year-round cyclist in the office!

Commuting on the Trek tour bike this week. The old cantilever brakes aren't very efficient from on top of the hoods, so to try and optimize them I changed the angle of the transverse cable, and got new salmon-coloured Kool Stop pads and now they shriek like a banshee. I washed the rims with soap (but not with abrasive or degreasing cleanser) which didn't help, and I haven't had time time to do the next steps yet - a better cleaning, sand the brake pads, toe them in, etc.

I wandered over to the 2017 Daffodil, Camellia and Floral Art Show at lunch today ... and I learned something. I had always thought that there were maybe half a dozen different types of daffodil. I found out there are a whole heap of varieties.

We have a ton of smoke from wildfires right now and there is a strong advisory against heavy activity, even local sports are being cancelled. It's not nice out there at times, like a building was on fire nearby.
